Unfortunately there is alot of pomposity and elitism in the IDM/Braindance fanbase. But hey, that's just my opinion. Who gives a fuck.

what bullshit. all that emotional stuff is projected by YOU - it is not inherently there in the music.
also, I have never heard anything AFX has done that sounds like ae AND the other way round.
they are different (although I do think ae's progression is 1000x more interesting than AFXs..)

Well, I think slint has a little, hidden point there... I know a lot of people who say they dig Aphex, but when I put on a CD with him they get a headache. They're only pretending to like him just because everybody else say they do.

Well i've never read anything about him that went too far i think.
Maybe the "richard is god" talk is a bit extreme ;-) But i mean serious articles, and also serious posts on this board. Many people (myself included) just like his music alot. How does that make him overrated?
What was it that made you start this thread? I'm curious...

Well, i have to agree on some of the posts here stated. I admire Richard`s versatility and camouflage, the ability to shift in time from SAW II to his self titled album, or the complexity and variety on Drukqs itself. He was one of the pioneers on drill core and the current braindance movement, which is btw, something to be appreciated and admired for. Autechre are too cold to be compared to AFX, too mono_emotioned. Tom Jenkinson on the other hand, could also be called a genius of breakbeats, but lacks richard`s emotional approach.
(listen to NULLSLEEP and all your nightmares will be over).

btw, being into music just for the mainstream is probably the stupidest thing someone could do.

I think "overrated" is an impossible word. no one is omniscient. You cant say "everyone who likes this person only likes him in a superficial way that isnt real" because you are not that "everyone" If you dont like him, thats fine, but obviously others do, and being an independent mind, you can in no way deny the credibility of their view. Hence, any rating he gets is "real" and not some sort of smoke screen covering some shamefull secret.
everything is subjective, and trying to say that someone elses views are wrong is like trying to fuck a chicken. you get off, but you kill the chicken.
wait, that doesnt make any sense.

afx is more like a history, he (and i mean the known biography, meanings of tracks, lifestyle) and his own label with some artists combines some much together. so the afx hype is totally too late. afx was '90 - '97.

Richard D. James gave me the light... the power... emotions... and much more. Thanx to Richard James aka Aphex Twin, AFX, Caustic Window, Polygon Window, The Diceman, GAK, Bradley Strider, Blue Calx, Powerpill Pacman, Q-Chastic, Soit pp, Universal Indicator, etc... to exist.
AFX give happiness to my celebral waves.

if i think to songs like fingerbib, windowlicker, goon gumpos, the waxen pith, donkey rhubarb,on(to name but few of my fav songs)and thinking that so many people have never listened to them in their life i have to say afx is UNDERRATED!if you talk of experimentalism in music i have to say there are other people-ovuca for example-who have substitute afx by creating a unique and special sound...so there's not only afx in the world today!!

85-92 or volume II?
Well it doesn't matter ;-) They are both beautiful actually. Shame you sold it!
85-92 is worth every penny just to be able to hear Heliosphan which sounds close to perfect... in that style of music, i do not think it's possible to write a better song. (i must admit 85-92 has it's weaker moments though).
Volume II is beautiful from start to finnish! One of the best albums ever created.

Seems to me that people who were listening when it was released regard it more highly.
It might make sense - if your intro was RDJ or Drukqs, you might find the sound a little simple or cheesy.

You twats are not fit to worship at the church of Aphex. Begone. If you don't like some of his stuff it's only because you're too thick to understand it. It's above you. Don't even try to appreciate it. Just buy the new Robbie fucking Williams album and go home and listen to it and then watch tv and eat and get fat and die.

everyone is rated just right.
and i dont think "complicated" is a good way to describe Ae's music. There music is complex, but there is a lot more making it good than that.
I think is futile to judge music except on a personel level. Whats the point, you never get anywhere.
