MUSIC:what do you look for

I don't really look for anything in music. If it's good, I
may not even like at first, but if it truly is good, I'll
like it eventually. (For example, alot of artists like
Autechre and genres like drum and bass and progressive
house, I did not like at first. but now I realize what's so
great about Autchre and those two genres.

It just takes time. I can like almost ANYTHING, given
enough time.

+maybe if you are looking at it from a begginers point of
view... +

heh...did you bother reading the post posted four times by
accident..

there are 7 tones..the other five are shades..sharps and
flats they dont exist as unique entities..they are merely a
modification of the tones they preceed or follow...
text book stuff really unless you got different texts..then
I suggest you chuck em out and look for some real theory..
and in the mean while also look beyond your western
structures and maybe study the Japanese and Balinese music
and the concept of quarter tones..

in comparison the western music is quite trite...

"look for some real theory.. "

um

Im majoring in composition... i think i know what im talking
about.

its 12 tones.

ever heard of 12 tone harmony?

uhhhh yeah.... thats where the name comes from.

And yes I know about non western music. I know about quarter
tones etc. And sure there is alot you can do with it... but
alls I was saying, is to say that the 12 TONE system is
trite and cheesy sounding... is a very ignorant thing to
say.

well that's me igoramus maximus..but what I was trying to
say is that every possible extrapoaltion of these ahem 12
tones has possibly been exhausted in the past millenium it
has been churned out..it's like the old postmodernism
claim..I dont think there is such a thing as an original
melody springing out of this outdated system....

it has to be thoughtful music, i have to be able to tell
that the person that wrote it thought about it, like an
artist, had a vision he/she wanted to make audiable...so as
many of you say i guess it has to have "emotion" and be
artistic, visionary and thoughtful,,

a "good" melody or beat will obviously be "good"!
but thats not what good music is made out of..there's some
beautiful music with basically no melody or beats...all the
pop boy-band rubbish is based on "good" catchy melodies. but
that doesn't make them good...because the ppl that wrote
those tracks didn't have an artistic vision they wanted to
fulfil..all they wanted was a catchy melody that ppl will
hum and will sell millions,, its not thoughtful, thats what
i look for in music , the artist has to think with his heart
...

also i don't look for expermintalisim..
expermentalisim doesn't automatically mean good, but i find
that alot of "expermintal" music has that thoughtfullness
and visionary i'm looking for...offcourse sum expermintal
music can be complete shit..not ne thing weird is
expermintal , some is just pure crap and noise
