Ceri: your christian spirit has spoken: what if I have some
possessions that i can not make undesirable? And what if
people breaking into my appartment are just a bunch of
crackheads looking for anything?

Our car wasn't great and was quite old. Kids who just want
to go joyriding will nick anything if they're just going to
have fun and then burn it out. They're the little bastards
you have to watch out for cos there's loads of them.

But you wouldn't shoot them, surely, so this does not
contribute to our argument.

My grandmother ,who died sunday had one.(illegal)
And now ,we are wondering what we're gonna do with it...

keep it? (What can WE do with a gun?)
give it to the cops? (hi,this gun is illegal!)
sell it? (definitely not!)

Any suggestions?

Sorry, what I said to Jonesy about my car was meant to be
light hearted and jokey.

Reflex: I understand the need to protect yourself, but don't
you agree that you do get *some* people who just have guns
to fuck around and "look hard"- just as some people collect
martial arts weapons for which they have no training. Just
so they can fuck about and impress their friends.

BTW What I said about swords being more skillful than guns-
what I meant is that whilst I accept that there is skill
involved in guns (I'm a reasonable air pistol marksman), you
could go on a "spree" with a gun with very little training,
whereas you'd have to be a very good swordsman to be able to
injure scores of people before you got stopped.

Hammer the barrel flat and throw it into a river. Not very
eco-friendly but at least it will be out of action.

I would just take it to a police station and say you found
it in an alley near your house.

Oh, c'mon Ceri , I know you were kidding, I was just taking
a piss but still trying to make a point. I know of a lot of
examples of people breaking into people's houses with an
intent to either kill the residents and take their
possessions or (worse) torture them to find out about the
valuables. It happens all the time over here. It fucking
pisses me off. But you are right about a bunch of people
just having guns to pose with and feel "masculine" or
something. My first post on this thread was pissing on those
people. In my country we have two kinds of gun licenses: one
of these allows you to have a gun only at home: you are not
allowed to take it into the street. That, kinda makes sense.

Supreme: either destroy it and throw the remains into trash
or give it to the cops.

blowguns are much better than swords or guns as they are
silent and can be used from quite a distance!

they are a paradox- if no one had guns no one would need
guns...but since some people have them, we all need them.
bearing in mind guns have been around for hundreds of years

The thing is, I only know of 1 person here (in the area
where I live now and my home town) has a gun.
I probably know 500 people. Let's say that 1 in 500 people
here have guns (the actual figure is nowhere near that high
for where I live)

I think the low risk of this person breaking (or another
with a gun) into my house with a gun is worth it compared to
the thought of me having access to a gun when I might be
angry or drunk.

I'm not sure about other countries- in america the frontier
heritage practically demands you "protect your land" and
it's something endemic in the culture.

Instead of going "well, since everybody seems to own a gun,
it would be pretty stupid for me not to have one just in
case someone else decided to use one on me" I think we
should go "you know, guns are pretty stupid. Maybe I
shouldn't get a gun"

I would rather be shot than own a gun.

I used to think the same way when I was younger, but, and
don't get me wrong, I don't have a gun and am not planning
of getting one, why should someone else be more valuable

If they feel the need to shoot me, I guess they have a
pretty good reason to feel that way. Who am I to judge? They
get to live with the consequences.

his two exbest friends. He wanted to get a new gun because
it made him fell all powerfull and stuff. His energy was
horrible.

But surely, put yourself in this situation: someone breaks

cool with that?

Not cool with it... not going to be happy to die... but
everything always seems to weave itself in an uncertain but
definate direction, doesn't it? Does this make sence?

I am pretty tired right now... but have always felt this
way.

I have always just been more confortable with this feeling
or opinion than one where I felt the need to defend myself
against a million unseen dangers.

very very intresting topic so far. i hate to
say it but i agree with reflex this time. no ass kicking is
gonna make anyone think twice about doin' whatever they want
to you again for that. it'll make them want to come back
and get revenge on your punk ass.

you are all missing the whole point, guns are to keep the
govt from fucking you in the ass with their rule and power
and authority if they ever try and get the military to turn
against us like making a dictatorship or some shit.
seriously i highly doubt anyone could even try and invade
this shit with the gun laws the way they are.

an (older) friend of mine was in a bar here last week
watching the football with some friends and 3 guys come up
to them and say "we are in sheffield united's firm and
there's 10 of us waiting downstairs for you" and one of my
friends mates was acting weirdly cos he's got a mental
problem so the tough guy was going to hit him and then the
mental guy apologised stuck out his hand to shakes hands to
which the other guy stuck his hand out and then did that
trick of pulling his hand back and waving his hand on his
nose (to which my friend nearly fainted). the other guy knew
there was something wrong with him and decided to leave them
along. But I mean, it was completely unprovoked, people just
look for fights, its so stupid. completely unrelated
however!

Whoever says there's no reason to have a gun except to feel
like a big man is way off.

You can be have them for show/collecting, competition,
hunting...And saying those are pointless is like trying to
take coins and stamps away from hobbyists saying "Oh they're
only for currency/postage."

If someone wants to have one just in case of an emergency,
what's it to you? If you think he's incompetent enough to
hurt someone accidentally, it's not going to be about
anything you care about.

And...If you think that if no guns were around, there would
be no threat...What is wrong with you?

I'm not saying you have the right to have guns for
protection, but if you wake up and someone is holding a
knife at you, you can sort of wish that guns were still
legal...if they were outlawe.d

A lot of right-wing gun advocates in the united states want
guns for another reason besides defense against intruders -
they feel it is their right for the civilian population to
own guns in case they need to overthrow a corrupt
military/government.

Sounds a bit ridiculous to me.

I don't really believe in widespread gun ownership. But if
it's so important to you, and you aren't a criminal, then I
don't have a problem with someone owning a gun for defense.

But thats so stupid, the majority of your comments here
people are "what if" and "I wish" or "if there were no
guns"..... this is a fantasy world, there are guns, there
will be guns and either you have one or you dont.

I will have one, and I have 2 now... I dont touch them, I
havent in years. And when Im on my own ill have one, I mean
protection.

It all comes down to this, maybe some doods wont have guns,
but MAYBE they will and then its all over. Why take that
chance? And it shouldnt be a problem if your got good
intentions.

By outlawing guns it will only make it worse, the large
percentage of guns that criminals use are stolen or not
registered, therefore ILLEGAL. So making them illegal will
change nothing as far as criminal activity with them. It
will just give them the advatage.
