So finally i bought myself a cd with music by Satie...
after all the talk of aphex twin being influenced by him, i
was incredibly curious to how it would sound!

I had no idea where to start, so i just bought the one with
the prettiest artwork (which also just so happened to be the
cheapest ;-)). It's called "early piano works vol.1", and
the piano is played by reinbert de leeuw.

I must say i really like it! It totally puts the
druqks-pianotracks in a new perspective for me (satie is
much better in my opinion...)richard is able to
produce a nice melancholic atmosphere with his piano... but
the satie-cd has that same atmosphere, and at the same time
the songs are obviously better... more constructed and with
much more subtle melodies (all imo ofcourse). I really like
it! It's very relaxing, yet not boring.

The cd mostly consists of his "gnossienes" (part 1 - 6), + 3
other tracks. I think i'm going to try and find vol2 of this
series aswell :-)

heh, i guess this is my first "classical" cd. My mom has
loads of those, but the singing always irritates me
(ridiculously high female voices, and ludricrously low male
voices... opera-style... baah... i can't take that
seriously!). Luckily satie is all instrumental.

opera style singing puts me off as well!

I have a slightly different Satie one, also played by de
leeuw. It is good, but it is played too slowly, even for
Satie, IMO. I can't remember which other pianist I have a
recording of the tracks being played by, but it's much
better and still retains the typical Satie "slowness".

:-)

my mom says she felt the same way when she was my age, but
that she has grown to love it...

we'll see... maybe my opninion will change when i'm 50 too
;-)

I love a lot of classical music, but I have to admit that
opera is quite annoying mostly. Though the operatic-style of
something like the Upshaw performance of Gorecki's Symphony
of Sorrowfull Songs is gorgeous.

hm... i have actually seen that complaint before on a
satie-site... some people feel reinbert playes too slow,
others think his slowness makes the music even better...

eitherway de leeuw's versions are the only one i've heard so
far... so i can't really judge yet. I love this... but i
might like another interpretation even better.

Anyway... when you get around to it, would you be so kind as
to look up who the other versions you heard are played by?
I'd be interested to hear them myself! :-)

i also really love the writing in the artwork! Satie was
even stranger than rdj :-p

Have a look at his (according to himself) daily routine:

"the artist must regulate his life. Here is the timetable of
my daily actions:

My rising - 7:18
Inspired - from 10:23 to 11:47
I lunch at 12:11 and leave the table at 12:14

Salutary ride on horseback down in my park - from 13:19 to
14:53
Further inspiration - from 15:12 to 16:07

Various occupations (fencing, reflection, immobility,
contemplation, dexterity, bathing etc.) - from 16:21 to
18:47

Dinner is served at 19:16 and finished at 19:20.
Then come symphonic readings out loud - from 20:09 to 21:59

My retiring occurs regularly at 22:37.
Once a week I awake with a start at 3:19 (tuesday)."

:-p
So peculiar!
He also ate only white food (this list is quite
disgusting!), and his entire wardrobe consisted of 12
identical velvet suits...

mmm... i really really really love gnossiene #1! (listening
to it as we speak)... this is probably my favourite track
off the cd.

I did a version of Gnossienne 1 and 3: they are located at
my mp3.com address, which is www.mp3.com/the_pfs

very interesting...

i'm listening to your version of #1 at this moment.

It reminds me of uh... how do you say... like an egyptian
snake-charmer? A guy who plays the flute and hypnotises the
cobra with it :-)

I like it! It gives me the same feeling as the
piano-version... but the percussion is a nice touch... very
subtle. I'm glad you didn't "rape" the gnossiene and turn it
into something completely different, if you know what i
mean.

your #3 is even better i'd say! As a composition i prefer
the first one, but i think the instruments you used on #3
are very beautiful...

yeah... great music! I think i'll check out some of your
other songs too :-)

I have a Sony disk called simply Piano Works, with Daniel
Varsano and Philippe Entremont tickling the ivories. It has
a broad range of his stuff, from the lyrical gymnopedies and
gnossiennes to some jarring experimentalism.

I particularly love the pieces "Je Te Veux" and "Poudre
d'or" from his cafe-concert period. They would fit in
perfectly on the Amelie soundtrack.

sounds cool!
I actually hate the fact that so many different versions of
the same compositions exist... with the 20th century artists
i like the fact that their albums are the "defenitive"
versions of the songs... that i can get to know and love.

With satie i'll never know how he intended his music to be
listened to :-/

Still... i'll remember (try) those two titles... je te
veux... poudre d'or.... thanks! I adore the
Amélie-soundtrack :-D

hey marlowe... your other stuff is much different from the
gnossienes-interpretations... so much variation in your list
of tracks! I listened to a couple of them and liked some
alot, and some others not so much.

But overal, i was quite impressed :-)

i have a virgin classics double cd with the complete
pianoworks by Satie. It's performed by Anne Queffelec. It
reminds me alot of Brian Eno's Ambient 2 record.

ive been listening to him a lot lately..
find a cd with his 3 nocturnes on them..
nocturne lll is one of the most gorgeous piano pieces ive
ever heard *gurgle gurgle*
it reminds me of pentitil cx htdui from drukqs
well..it should be the other way around..pentitil sounds
inspired by this piece

funny someone mentioned the amelie soundtrack.. it almost
sounds as if yann tiersen quoted a bit from gnossienne 1
on parts of the soundtrack

and yeah.. he definitely exceeded rdj in terms of
weirdness.. his titles were always strange..like 'dried
embryos' and 'flabby preludes (for a dog)'
he also started his own church.. intended as a mockery of
religion i think
