Quoth

Just been going through the old releases on Warp and got up
to 'Quoth'. What a shift!

You just know something changed forever when this record
came out on Warp.

So many people praise Quoth as being amazing--but to me,
it's just shite.

marlowe,

Yeah but you've really got to appreciate it within its
context. I don't think its the best Aphex record, by any
means. But its the importance of it which is key.

I get the impression sometimes that people who have just got
into Aphex (not suggesting you have) etc find lots of old
electronic records too simple etc to get into. I think that
if you were listening to this stuff back in the early
nineties you appreciate it more whereas if you go back from
now people may find it hard to appreciate.

Don't worry, Promo, I'm not one of these new kids to AFX :)
I've dug him since '92, but I just never got into Quoth--it
just sounded so bad to me :)

But I'm aware I'm in a minority, so I won't push it :)

Its been a while since he used his gills, Im sure he
appreciates you suggesting fresh water as opposed to
stagnant water with low oxygen saturartion.

we cant forget about early dancefloor oriented aphex stuff-
it may sound shitty by modern standarts but this tracks are
really essential and classical (talkin of "didgeridoo" for
example)

and quoth is a fantastic dancefloor-bomb, witch builds up
the tension in a very professional way ;)

Both of those tracks are novelties. Motivated to tire people
out with high bpm monotony.

I rate all of Aphex's tracks. I do agree with marlowe
'Quoth' isn't my favourite track. Wasn't my favourite at the
time, I did find it a touch dull. But revisiting it it feels
right. I mean I've heard it so many times now anyway.

Steamtank,

I don't think Aphex's early stuff sounds shitty as you put
it by modern standards. Its sounds to me like your new to
Aphex to say something like that (no offence).

mr promo i am talking about the production site of early
aphex works- even saw 85-92 sounds shitty in
digital-sound-processing era but it is sweet and have this
kind of analog magic :) (btw i ve been listening to afx
since "come to daddy" ep so you can say i am pretty new to
his stuff)

Steamtank,

I thought you were new to Aphex. I guess I don't know what
its like to just get into Aphex and then try and get into
his old stuff. Perhaps your right, perhaps for those who've
just got into electronic music its hard to appreciate the
older stuff. I guess in the same way its hard for us older
guys to appreciate all the new stuff. Interesting.

i'm super-bored and alone and i didn't even celebrate, just
sat home and alone most of the night listening to a freaking
war and did i tell you i was bored as i am now

and i'm gonna be 3 months without pot and now finally when
my bf and the other lads get here they go to the garage to
smoke 'so it wouldn't be so bad for me'(like a was some kind
of narcomanic!) and i have no computer games to play because
my bf did not install me a dos emulator although he promised
weeks ago and i'm not skilled enough to do that and i have
nothing to read. i have the flu, but not bad enough to be
REALLY sick only annoyingly half-sick.

and it's -30 outside so i'm sure as hell not going there,
not even to look at the sky. and i'm so bad at playing
nintendo i can't play mario :(

and i have used all the stuff i bought to make shirts during
the holidays so i can't make shirts anymore :(

to summarize this rant: I'M TOO ULTRABORED AND LEFT WITHOUT
ATTENTION I WANT TO (almost) KILL SOMEONE

i can appreciate his old productions and i am doing it
actually- i like "ICBYD" and "SAW2" albums more than
"Drukqs" or "Windowlicker ep". although his stuff is much
more complex nowadays.

Steamtank,

Honestly you don't have to justify it. I guess I can
appreciate what you saying you get use to a certain standard
of complexity in tracks and going back things can sound
primitive in comparison.

wait some time and you'll see it's a first step to something
wonderful and new... it's evolution, baby. it's not
necessary that you like all the by-products

i dont think so mr skyfarmer- "drukqs" is staying in the
same point in which mr james ve been standing since his
"richard d james" album with a little step toward
satie-style piano pieces.

steam, there's some amount of decay there... positive
decay... I mean, he won't keep doing these drum things
forever. He's going somewhere otherplace while avoiding
direct minimalism

I must confess I am finding it hard to appreciate a lot of
the new stuff.

Like everybody seems to rave about Venetian Snares and I've
listened to it a few times I think its good but he just
sounds like a good Squarepusher copiest, thats it really. I
mean I wouldn't not listen to it. And Richard Devine again
interesting etc but I mean its difficult to get into 'cause
there is no music really. I don't know I'll keep trying I
guess.

well i think he WILL be making a lot of drill complex stuff
in the future but he will probably release more piano
tracks.

and mr promo- i had the same problem with mr snares- i was
thinking of his as of a less-talented copy of jenkinson...
until i have heard "winter in the belly of a snake" and this
album with numbers in the title- he has pusher-like style
but he is very very good- and i am sure that i like his
works more than jenkinsons last ones.

evolution makes mistakes, and goes harsh sometimes. drukqs

Windowlicker EP is quite fantastic!
