Music PC

I´m about to start making software based music. I will buy
me a PC as soon as I have the money.
What do you think is important when buying a PC for music?
I think i´m not going to use softsynths that much. I´m
more into sound, sound tweeking with editor and recording
stuff. And Acid like programming.
I think i´m going to use Logic and a couple of sound
editors maybe a softsyth or a softsampler.
So what do you think of this?

about amd1700+
a motherboard
512 or 256 ram(DDR, SDRAM... ...i´m lost in all thees
memory types, wich one to choose?)
Cd-rw
40gb HD
an old Voodoo 3 2000 3d card
some kind of SoundBlaster(128, Live) utnill I get money and
need to buy a better sound card(The SoundTrack Audio DSP24
with midi)
some kind of old MIDI synth from a friend
a computer mic until I find need for abetter one.

what is wrong?

Remmember that the my budget is quite low.

And one last question: What´s up with thees softsamplers,
what can you do with them, that you can´t do with Logic and
a SondEditor

go for something with at least 256 ram, 512 is better but
256 should do the job well.
If I was you I would go for something like logic or cubase
and a softsampler program like fruityloops or reason. I use
fruityloops and hate reason though. But others will say
otherwise.

ddr memmory is whats used on all the new mainboards, its
supposedly twice as fast, sdram , the old stuff is half as
expensive but ddr is required for new boards..

i got my cd burner for 90 bucks, 40 speed write, they are
getting cheaper and chearper, thats cad$ too, but i also
bought a dvd reader for a sperate machine, for 70, but i
could have gotten a combined burner/dvd reader for 150,
maybe something to think about, even if you have a video dvd
player and you think you wouldnt want to watch movies on
your tv, alot of large software (development stuff) is
coming on dvds these days and also there is often pc sstuff
on video dvds

yes others will say otherwise! reason is cool. as is fruity!
cubase is good, never tried logic!! i would recommend a mac,
but if it has to be a pc then i would say that anything over
500mhz and 128mb of ram will be fine! the most important
things are the soundcard, get a 24/96 (thats 24bit 96khz)
for the 'best' sound, and a nice monitor, because you want
something which allows you to view things without hurting
your eyes, ie get a TFT(flatscreen) if budget allows or a
17".
download demos of programs to see if you like them or not.
oh and about the ram, DDR is better than SDRAM, i.e double
data rate, so get this if budget allows for it. hope that
helps. I use a 400Mhz celeron with 128mb of ram, and it
works fine with cubase, fruityloops and reason,as well as
all outboard gear:)

DDR is a good choice - 256 is quite enough.
You DEFINITELY should buy 80Gb, not 40 - difference is some
10-15 bucks. Really. And you'll need that space...

I'd go for a weaker CPU - you always can upgrade it later.
Your choice, tho.

dont get a pc, get an ibook or a powerbook. that way you
can run all the good audio programs, and its easy to play
shows. macz all da way.

a standard sblive value sound card should do the trick, and
there fairly cheap. you can also download kxproject drivers
for it wich will give you decent latency, though i found
them to be a little unstable at times.
