My Christmas spirit died...

Is it just me or does Christmas not feel like Christmas any
more, people making next to no effort with getting in the
spirit of things. I suppose I never did before but the
atmosphere just isn't there any more.

P.S. It's my b-day Christmas Day.

The commerciality of christmas has reached new depths--it's
depressing and hard to keep a hold of the Christmas spirit.

"its just you"

get the stick out your arse dood

You seem really negitive, my memory is a bad tough... but
have you had a though month or something qrter?

I dont like christmas for one reason, why should companies
and scociaty tell me when I should give gifts to people? Its
so rooted that if you dont buy gifts for people they think
your an ass. Ill buy presents for people when I want to, not
when the world tells me too.

Presents aside, I like the holidays.

Nay...never believed in santa...
And my family is not really conservative tradition wise...

I loved christmas as a child, but in part because I was
greedy and selfish, and the media had a lock on my brain
from age 3 - 10. It makes me sick that advertisers just
advertise to kids, in a ruthless pirate fasion. Bull shit
like: You HAVE to have this OR other kids WONT accept you!
WARNING!.

Corperate advertising twats, they are teh ones ruining
christmas.

Why if I had one of those advertising producers at my house
and a rubber hose I would beat them so bad.......

Also when you think that christmas for me meant mostly
family dinner with annoying cousins and stupid aunt you
understand where that spirit went...

Hmm it's been gone since last Christmas. DaWeeze, in some
strange probably indeliberate way, that has made me feel
better.

And Mick, that's a good way o' thinking, same goes for 'Why
should we wait until Valentines Day to tell someone we love
them?'

Christmas was a lot more fun when i was a little younger.
when i wasn't really old enough to understand
commercialization, and all the advertising bullshit.
nowadays, i find it hard to enjoy all the holidays when i
know it's this commercial. i still enjoy it, tho :)

get a life guys... you're all talking out of your asses if
you don't like getting gifts, and don't like Christmas... so
what if it's a commercial holiday, the gift giving and
everything... does the promotion of giving, and peace on
earth really hurt anyone? No...

offline Iroel from Pisa (Italy) on 2002-12-22 20:32 [#00488435]
Points: 1129 Status: Regular

The promotion of the facade of giving and peace of earth it
does hurt...

Pushing those ideals on others as our society does is
useless...how useful are thiose ideals if tehy last one day
per year?

We should push them through awareness and knoweledge, by
educating people...not by showing them off, and make them
feel as obligatory...or ritualize them...because in thsi way
they are truly meaningless...

And besides that: I don`t like to receive presents...

As I stated above I mostly receive useless stuff that I
don`t like, and than I feel obligated to buy some useless
stuff for the other person, because I care about them and I
don`t want to offend them...

the result is that at the end we both have useless stuff
that we don`t like...when we could have bought ourselves
something that we'd apreciate...

I love christmas, but I hate the commercialisation of
Christmas--the pressure put on parents and partners to
over-extend their budget--the incessent advertisements
pretending to be full of the Christmas Cheer, yet really
just a bunch of suited hustlers selling us all out for a
profit--and all the hassled shop workers at christmas being
treated like shit by ratchety customers--there's more to
Christmas than being a little boy receiving gifts--and
that's the bit I hate--Christmas sans the presents
would be at least as good as Christmas with presents.

Luckily My Gag reflex is well primed Alex-maybe there should
be brain doctors who can operate on people like me, so we
can conform to thinking that Money is Good and Businessmen
are our Friends and adverts are for our own Good...I have
10p to contribute towards this operation.

I like the holidays, it's about the only time when I get to
see a lot of my family.

But the religious aspect is meaningless to me and I
purposely avoid the crass commercialization by buying most
of my gifts by Halloween.

we shall make a whole campaign of commercials, infomercials
and adverts to convince/manipulate you in shoving more than
10p forward, even to let you pay the whole hog.. and you
WILL succumb.

yeah.. i really dont like christmas anymore.. i probably did
when i was a little greedy kid..
but now im pretty indifferent about getting gifts.. and i
hate getting people stupid stuff
its worse than usual this year.. my mom doesnt have enough
money to get anyone anything.. and she feels awful about
it.. and i hate that..

the whole holiday we're familiar with was created by
corporations anyways..
what does a fat man in a red suit, travelling around the
world in a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer, leaving toys
under a cut down pine tree and oversize socks have to do
with the birth of jesus?
and a good portion of the people who celebrate christmas
arent even religious..

another thing that bothers me is how this is supposedly the
time of year for 'giving' and 'good will' and helping the
homeless and whatnot...
why cant people be nice to each other all year?
why do they only care about the homeless for one month
rather than all twelve?

"When gift giving becomes a social obligation, it loses its

meaning as a sign of altruism... "

that was a good nuggest of truth there. i like being out of
school more than the whole christmas stuff. i mean yes
giving\receiving is not always bad but when stuff is given
to people "just because" is stupid. what i mean is that
people are\have been buying people things that are either on
sale or seem like good presents at the time but almost
always without thought. if people must be buying things at
christmas at least look for things that benefit each other
for the long run and not just another meaningful gift to
show that you can spend money on someone besides themselves.

"why cant people be nice to each other all year?"

That's a good question... but the fact that people celebrate
Christmas doesn't make people not be nice to others all
year... in fact I'd hate to see the state of things without
Christmas... at least we have one day, one season to
celebrate these ideals, and to promote good will and peace
and all that good stuff...

thats so true, people only give to charities (most people)
during the holidays or when theyre "supposed to", if people
would give all year, everyone lives would be better.
