I know there have been plenty of topics about MD but I did my search and couldn't find an answer to... my questions:
I am most likely going to buy a MD player/recorder for a few different uses. The main issue is sampling. Live recording of acoustical percusion and didgeridoo, maybe some flute, etc. is also in plan. I know it's not the ideal recording device, but what are my other options for portablismic recordability? Also, what do I look for in spec, features... mics?

is the mz707 portable, handheld? how common among these devices is usb transfer?
i've heard various opinions on the quality of the sound capture... some say the compression really does a number on the extreme frequencies, some say it's really quite good. how do you feel about it? do you even record with it? if so, which mic?
also, does the md recorder you have make seamless track transitions? in random mode (for the gescom md)?

i record alot with it, with different mics, right into the mic jack some people claim you get better reproductions using a powered mic into the line in, i have neever tried that nor never had any trouble with the recordings, i dont record music or instruments through the mic, mostly quite noises, atmospheric stuff (birds and trees) and the quality i found amazing when i first tried it, if you listen to a recording of outside my house, that was recorded with well separted stereo mics, so that the binaural quality is similar to what the human ears normally recieve its creepy how you cant tell whether your hearing live sounds or recorded ones, ie as a car drives by in the recording youd swear it was a real car. its handheld and tiny, really really small, it bugs me when people complain about the compression causing trouble, my main use is just listening to music, the one i have supports mdlp long play , on a normal 80 min disc you get normally 80 min stereo or 160 min mono, but on lp2 you get 160 stereo and on lp4 240 minutes stereo, i record all my music in lp2 and i honestly normally cant tell the diference btwnit and sp (normal 80 min stereo) so like you can fit usualy 3 albums on one disc, like i have both drukqs and rdj album on one disc, which is nice, and radioheads last three albums on one disc, ....cont.....

the usb trasnfer is nice, because you put a cd in your computer and hit transfer and goes to the md, track names and all,
transfer is only pc->md not the other way , which is amazingly stupid on sonys part but remember they are allso a record label, its a method i guess of preventing copy right infringment, so if you record live instrument you will have to trasnfer back to the pc via analogue, there is no digital out on most portable recorders, ive often tranfered back to pc via analogue allways had good results.....

the usb transfer software for mp3s, wavs, etc, to md is buggy and huge and stupid, and there are all sorts of hoops to jump through, ie you cant edit (delete, rename, change track marks) on an mp3 copied to the md via usb, these dont exist for the 'simpleburner'software for cd to md, via pc/usb, the simple burner software is nice and clean, no hassel, although you cant record from pc to md at sp quality, but like i said i find lp2 more then very good, its quality is like somthing like a 160 kbps mp3 but better designed compression algorithm, but really ive compared sp mode from cd and lp2 mode from cd and not been able to hear any difference......cont...

to get mp3s on the discs you can trick the system by makeing an audio cd image with nero and mounting the image so your computer sees it as a cd drive, then using simpkle burner to put it on md, its pretty quick and gives you unrestricted copys on the disc.
yes very "seamless track transitions? " i dont know about this gescom disc but i often record a conversation or something and put lots of track marks in it, like so each section is only a bit of a second and put it in random mode , fun to record news broadcasts and do that,
lost of people are activly trying to crack the usb transfer system to design their own bug free programs to transfer audio files to the minidisc, but theres lots of work left to do, see:http://gargoyles.monochromatic.net/pipermail/netmd-dev/
who knows maybe soemone will crack md->pc transfer although this all depends on the hardware/firmware

hmm ive got the mzr701
step down, doesnt have the usb facility
but yeah i use for recording jams, sampling etc
if the usb facility is as fiddly as dennispearce says then you could save a bundle and go this version. when it comes to putting md tracks onto computer i feed it thru the mixer again anyway, so yeah.

yeah, its not fiddly for going cd->md through the computer, thats really sleek and nice, just the other software is shit, actually you can use the free realone, reaplayre to go mp3_>md which is good and fast but still the only way to delete the track off the md is by pluggingit into your computer because it get stagged as protected.

why not? i do it allday... i made a nice little cloth case because the one it came with was too big and it is allpreotected and nice and clean i usually just have it in my backpack so it doesnt fall or nothing, my brother has dropped his like 5 times, big dents on the corners , its still working fine,
and mine takes one double a battery (rechargable) theres a built in c]harger in the md and lots and lots of battery life, i havnt charged it since last monday or something, and listened with it every day to and from work thats like 2 hours a day plus 3/4 hours at work most days, and i could probably go another bunch of days.

dennis, thanks for all the detials, i appreciate it. i'm a little unclear... the buggy problems are only with certain software, so it's no prob so long as i get different software? or are they set i stone? if i go for the cheaper model i just have to record my cds mp3s anaolgue in real time, as if i were recording with a mic, no?

yes there are portable dat recorders, i cant be of much assistance in that area.
if you get a md recorder without 'netmd' functions you will have to record to the disc using the analog line in, much like you would make a tape. and the quality is still great if your using a good source and cables its still very very good. many recorders also have digital optical in, so if you have a soundcard/dvdplayer/cd deck with digital out you can use that, most computer cd drives/burners have digital ttl level digital out on the back but you would need to convert this signal to optical digital (build a small circuit and attach an appropriate led and fiber optic cable to get it into the minidisc. for cds the sony software 'simple burner' is not buggy at all, the only restriction is highes trecording qulity is lp2 which as ive said above i find more then great, plus on this setting you get 160 minutes per disc. thats alot, especially as many albums are less then an hour. if you want to put mp3s/wavs/oggs/whatever on your minidiscs you must do one of a few things. use the included sony muscic jukebox or something like this software which is very buggy and poorly designed, use realmedias free realone player with a free plugin from them, this works well and literally lets you do 'drag and drop' uploading to the md. this is much less restrictive then sonys jukebox shit because the jukebox trys to limit how many time syou can upload a particular file before you 'check it back in' . one limit put on by both realone and jukebox is that you can not edit (rename/delete/insert trackmarks) on any files transfered from your computer to md without doing it through the computer, this is mostly just anoying. the third method which i preferred before i found the realone player is to use the cd byurning software nero to make and mount a virtual cd drive image of an audio cd. this is pretty neat and any software on your computer 'sees' this image a physical cd, so you can then use simpleburner which thinks your mp3s/wavs are a real
