Since I've seen many raving about BoC here, I decided to purchase their first (?) album.
I must say I can't see why so many peole love it so much-is there something I'm not getting?
When I first heard Autechre, I remember slating it here; but, it interested me...it made me want to hear more. And now I've gotten used to Autechre, and Confield's my most admired album ever.
However, I can't see the same happening for MHTRTC; it's just way to repetitive for me (not in a slightly changing/shifting kinda way either-it just stays the same) and although I admit tracks eventually develope, it's too little and it takes too long imo.
I feel ridiculous in a way for not "getting" this album; but to me, unlike other idm artists I hated at first, I can't see that there's anything to "get" here at all.
Sorry, I simply find it dead boring!
Anyone else not particularly into this album like me, or am I just weird?

I love it, but when I got it it was not nearly as hyped as it is now. I had read virtually nothing on it. You dislike it probably because you're supposed to like it. Give it a few more listens realizing that maybe it's not the best thing ever. Maybe it'll click, maybe not.

ah geez people get spoiled by aphex and squarepusher's hyper programming...
its a bit unfortunate when people cant appreciate music if it doesnt change every two seconds
though i must say.. when i first got into them.. mhtrtc bored me a bit too.. so yeah i guess it takes a bit to get used to after a steady diet of aphex and sp's more recent works..

Hehe! You are AMAZINGLY right....I've been listening to nothing but Aphex, Autechre, and ESPECIALLY Squarepusher lately, and that's probably why this album seems a little..bland? Not bland, actually...rather, well...all I can think of is repetitive. :D

CS2x,
I understand what your saying when I first heard BOC I just couldn't understand the hype. But the truth is I heard it a few more times and once I listened to it more and more I loved it. For me initially I thought the same thing, I thought this is too repetative etc but I don't know now I just think its up there with the greats like Aphex, Mu, Wagon Christ etc etc, in fact I'm listening to 'Geogaddi' right now. The music for me is very strong. Its the same when I heard Aphex's SOWII (some 8 years back) I thought whats this junk but you know I got it after a while.

i loved boc right away, so maybe they're just not your thing. it's all very moving to me, but that's subjective. don't completely give up on them though, maybe set it aside and pull it out on a super relaxed day some time from now.

and though there aren't too many explicit changes throughout their songs, you'd be suprised at how much is actually going on throught a song that you don't hear until many listens. they like to do stuff in the background, like play a melody so far in the distance just one time, you think you might not really have heard it. it's very subtle, but it's not just gimickry, it's beautiful what they do.

I got MHTRTC after I got Geogaddi, and I liked Geogaddi better. Some tracks on MHTRTC do nothing for me, but I find most to be achingly beautiful. I never really appreciated Pete Standing Alone until now, and it's probably my favorite track off of the album.

Geogaddi is the better album imo... it's just better in almost every way... a much fuller sound, better production, sweet melodies, etc, etc...

mhtrtc is such a beautiful album, before yous lag it you kind of have to understand that its beautiful mellow music and not a statement of obscure technical expertise
you might want to look into checking out some of the national film board of canada's old films in order to get a better idea of the influence behind their music, and the reason they chose the synths that they did, etc
beautiful tunes, one of the best albums I own geogaddi is a different album, it has a different melodic style to it, and sort of a different "purpose" it seems
I wouldnt compare the two albums, as both of them are excellent

Heh I had MHTRTC and Geo burned and wasn't impressed AT ALL, and then one night I was walking home and smoked a few cones at a bus stop and put it on during my walk (about 2am) and it just clicked all of a sudden and I went "oh shit I GET IT NOW" and I loved it since.
I dunno why, it just happened

I've just heard some of Geogaddi and I like it much more-thanks.
I think I'll change MHTRTC for this album instead-seems much more accomplished to me.
I *do* listen to MHTRTC while I surf the net, and it is lovely backround music...but I don't think I have the patience for most of the tracks. However, Geogaddi seemed to hold my interest far better while I listened to it in the shop.

i felt exactly the same way as you did, but i love it now. never thought i would.
doesn't come near twoism, though.
flea, you should do a remix of a boc song someday, see how you think they should sound ;)

early PoP stuff was my interpretation of what BoC could sound like..if they didn't waste too much energy whacking off to certain taboo pornocopia..the name Plaster of Paris was a play on Boards of Canada..but down the line the whole concept kinda deteriorated and the whole thing became yet another...

I must say I'm finding it very hard to fault BOC. For me there music is really everything I want from music pure emotion and pure resonance. I think as my sister said it 'its pretty easy to get very indicated to them and play their stuff to death'. I think that could be happening to me now.

she called me a teenager..heh I am old enough to fit two and a half teenagers in my life span..and I like glitch drillbreakcore..
it's all beautiful music..just fragmented and borken to it's micro molecular level..
a sampled 70's synth doesnt equate beauty, just nostalgia...

I was, and still am disappointed with MHTRTC. It might be because I bought Geogaddi before, and IABPOITC before that.
I read that Music Has the Right was more melodic, which I was happy to know because Geogaddi was at times tuneless i.e. nothing you could hum.
But when I got MHTRTC, I was completely repelled, it was so dull..perhaps back in 98' it was the shit but I wasn't there to hear it back then. However, I do like the beatless stuff a hell of a lot....come to think of it more that the other stuff. Olson, Bocuma and Open the Light were fantastic.
I simply have no love for popular stuff you guys mention...well maybe a little...
