Got my first 'DJ-lesson' yesterday

Went over to a mate's place and he explained how to mix
with 2 record players etc...
I thought it was hard, but not THAT hard.
But after 2 hours I managed to sync 2 records quite
reasonable within the duration of one of the records (took
me about 5 minutes to sync the damn things).
But... I just wanted to share this with you... ; )

Well done. Try learning to scratch- that's the hardest, esp.
with a beat mixing mixer :P

Dj'ing is no more about beat matching nowadays. Look at
venetian snares:
cross-fader right - move head right
cross-fader left - move head left
cross-fader right - move head right
cross-fader left - move head left
cross-fader right - move head right
cross-fader left - move head left
cross-fader right - move head right
cross-fader left - change track

So concentrate more on the way you look cool when mixing.
work your smile. work the way you block your headphones
between your shoulder and your neck. Get some cool t-shirt.

I do have a little pain in the neck from that
headphone-blocking.
Anyways, I enjoyed it a lot, especially when I first synced
2 records and it just worked out right.
I dont smoke... is that a problem to become a DJ?

yes - start with 5 lucky lights for the first two weeks.

DJs who smoke whilst playing are so annoying. Smoke damages
the equipment (okay, so does smoke machine smoke...), ash in
the crossfader etc. is not nice. It dirties the mixer
buttons etc. it's another thing to distract you etc. I think
they're like 14 year olds- smoking to look hard.

Oh, whilst on the subject of DJing, has anyone here ever
used monitor speakers rather than headphones for cueing etc?
works pretty well.

I smoke while I DJ in my bedroom. My teddy bears reckon I
look, I quote, "Hard as nails".

and it's so horrible cleaning after a party when all the djs
have smoked by the decks and thrown the stuff everywhere

plus djs who wont play if they don't smoke are pains in the
butt; we organize chill-out events so it would be nicer if
no-one smoked in the main room

Lots of clubs have monitors... You can easily connect them
to the headphone port with the correct cables & jacks.
Saves you getting "headphone crick" in your neck :)

<--- grabs the treble and the bass knobs and starts rotating
his body while he twists them...then he gives the treble
knob a sudden twist while releasing...

excellent move, it makes go the crowd go on fire while
making you look buisy...

My tip: Don't have the monitor level in your headphones too
high.

Also: smoking while mixing, making a mess, spilling ash on
the mixer, chucking cans on the floor etc...
Guilty as charged.

+ previous form for doing lines off the mixer, stealing
lighters, bringing my own alcohol to the club, blowing up
amps & playing run dmc in a drum n bass set

mixing snares is easy, i was doing it the other night... you
just put the two on and move the fader around. it sounded
good too!

offline str_ph from Cambridge (United Kingdom) on 2002-12-12 02:36 [#00478371]

no it's a little bit more complex. you have to move the head
accordingly to the fader position. see the 4th post on this
topic for more break-l33t teknikz

I need to buy a shitload of gear. I cant afford to also buy
tables and stuff... Maybe I need to sell my body...

Anyone???
Morton??? just 20 Euros!

offline Morton from out (Netherlands, The) on 2002-12-12 04:03 [#00478407]
Points: 10000 Status: Addict

excuse me?!
buy your body?!
who do you think i am?!
i'd rather buy a dog :)
or chupachups
or a polarbear

and besides that 20 Euros is way too much
i am not rich
("i am mike" <- not funny)
i have only 80 cents

but
if you desperately need money i'd advice you to remix 26
songs and put them on a CD..
you only have to think of an original CD-name after that..

yeah beat mixing feels good - i just mixed jay jay johanson
into the gantz graf track last night (yes it fits together)

smoking while spinning doesnt ruin anything - i hate not
being able to smoke when i spin somewhere -

learn to scratch - its hard at first (i remember i smashed a
lot of my break records in anger)

but stick w/ it - djing is fun galore

also if you mix stuff like v snares (with no understandable
parttern of drums or structure) it DOESNT matter how you mix
- when i mix too noise tracks i dont give a fuck where the
pitch control is on either deck

yeeeeeeeee haw
