bjork was apparantly in a weird band as the singer before
she went solo and released "debut" does anyone know what
this band was called?

the sugarcubes.

it wasn't weird... pretty basic pop i think. but i've heard
only a little. the only thing i liked about it was björk's
voice...

Eat your heart out:

The history of Bjork is one of those oddities that only the
diehard fans seem to know or care about. Her first album was
actually something she put together as a child. It is a
collection of Icelandic oddities that is simply entitled
"Bjork". Bjork's spent her early years not in electronic
music but in punk! In fact one of her first experiments was
an all-girl band called "Spit and Snot". In regards to the
noteworthy stuff she's done before going solo, her first
somewhat successful bands were Tappi Tíkarrass and Kukl.
Nobody really noticed Bjork and her unique voice outside of
Iceland until she became lead singer for the Sugarcubes.
After they broke up, she released one more album before
Debut. It is called Gling-Glo. It is a bunch of jazz songs
all sung in Icelandic except the last two tracks. If you're
interested in any of her older stuff i recommend "The Great
Crossover Potential" (A Sugarcubes collection) or "Life's
Too Good" (The debut Sugarcubes album), and of course
Gling-Glo.

there are a few others that i really love, almost as
worthwhile to check out as birthday, but in general the
sugar cubes are not my thing. i really like some of the
kukl i heard. i've seen some live footage and that was one
intense band. bjork said somewhere einar would choke
himself on stage or something, total madness.

gling-glo is so great 'cause the vocal style is so differnet
from that of any of her other stuff, so you get to hear her
doing things with her voice that you don't hear anywhere
else.

Is that the Plaid mix they used for the video? That mix is
terrific. And I'm not a big Plaid fan.

Bjork is awesome. I think she was one of the first to bring
electronic music in an apropriate way to the mainstream
recently (if you consider bjork popular music). Most
everyone I know has heard of bjork even my grandma (she
likes her vespertine album), and they think of her as an
excellent musician. Most people dont think of her music as
most closed minded people describe electronic music (beeps
and bloops...). Usually when I introduce people to "IDM"ish
music I tell them to buy something by bjork... it them makes
them more open about other electonic music (like aphex twin,
steve riech, autechre... whatever...)

She has such a distinc voice... but a lot of power behind
it... lots of range
