Modding a machine to play illegal games is, well... illegal. It's not evil for Microsoft to do that, it's perfectly understandable. They don't want cheap asses playing games online they didn't pay for. You fuck MS over, they fuck you over, only fair.
That said... I hope somebody finds a way around this and beats the big corp. I'm a dirty software pirate myself! Arrrr, matey!

You and your GBA roms ophie ;)
What's bad about it is you might buy a second hand Xbox sans modchip and then find it is banned once you try to connect. It's a bit unfair of them to do it as some people do genuinely just use modchips in order to write their own games. The team that made Raiden for the Xbox did this...

I don't know about over in canada or australia but over here in Britain the X-box is dying on its ass. I think Billy boy is regretting dipping his toe into the console market.

I don't think this is such a bad thing really...cheating is the bane of online gaming; Quake was pretty much ruined by people with all the bots & cheats...MS are after providing a quality online experience; that means ensuring no cheats...so all this seems fair enough to me & a pretty cool design decision...
Ceris right about the 2nd hand market tho...but personally I think that's a small price to pay for the level playing field this provides...
There's been an interesting response to this over at Slashdot (generally the most rabid anti-MS group outthere..)...the vasy majoirty are applauding this as a great idea...
The reaction to Xbox Live in general is pretty damn positive...everyone I've spoken to is chuffed to bits with it...it's Broadband only & that's another help in ensuring everyone gets a decent experience out of the system...
Looking forward to Xmas!!...the other half is still wavering a little about us getting one but I reckon I can switch on the old jand charm..:)...

oh...and switchable mod chips are on the radar...so you can have the best of both worlds; just switch it off when using Live...

still early days tho, glass...PS2 has got over a years lead on Xbox so it's bound to have more games...
On a technical level, the Xbox is more capable than a PS2...hopefully in 2003, we'll see more of what it's capable of...

But imagine coming in mashed and forgetting to flip the switch? One mistake and your Xbox is blacklisted...
Good point about the cheating though. I used to love counterstrike online even though I wasn't that good at it, but cheats completely ruined it... Even things like punkbuster didn't get rid of it totally, something like the Xbox but with a Keyboard and mouse (DC anyone? ;) ) would be the ideal platform for cheat free deathmatch. My house got so fed up of cheats online we prefered to play 2 player teams (4 player total) of DM games because we knew it was going to be a fair game.

There are new mod chips coming out that will have a "bypass" switch. Before going online you'll click this and it will have no way of telling it has been modded. No doubt Mr Gates' crew will put something on all new xboxes after this that will save a hidden file to the harddisk of the xbox whilst the mod chip is used thereby showing if a modchip (switchable or not) has ever been used. Then the hackers will find a way around this and so on.
When will companies learn it's only profitable to software audit large corporations? In other instances anti-piracy devices cost more to develop than they save. It smacks of merely doing it to spite users. If they want to, fine, but it ultimately costs them more than if they just accepted that there will always be some degree of piracy...

Yes and originally an AT messagedboard. And for the topic of all things AT related...
AT likes videogames. He samples them in his tracks... About 70% of people here seem to like games. Deal with it.

yeah, that could be a problem...we'll have to wait and see what the mod people come up with...I doubt they'll let us down...
MS are really pushing Xbox as a console for people beyond just the hardcore gamer crew...your average man in the street knows bugger all about cheats etc & simply wants a decent & fair online experience...you gotta hand it to MS for taking a stance on this....
Plus it's not just cheats this combats...I should imagine it wouldn't be too hard to hack the network & DOS a load of people if this sort of policing wasn't in effect...
That slashdot thread makes real interesting reading... Slashdot thread at Level 3 to save your reading eyes ... if you wanna hear more about the pros & cons of this...

After a really shitty start, Xbox is finally starting to catch up to it's competitors in terms of quality games : Splinter Cell is one of the best games I've ever played. The gameplay is innovative and challenging and the graphics are some of the best I've ever seen. It's not just me either -- It hasn't received anything less than a 90 from any publication that's reviewed it. The official Xbox magazine gave it a 9.6(Halo scored a 9.5). Hell, the only blow against the game is that the development team responsible for it is Canadian.

Pikmin is probably my favorite of all time. I've never had more fun playing a videogame my whole life.. There's so much vibrancy and character in everything. I almost cried the first time I tried to take my reds through the water.
