Today I was listening to some old Goa Trance mixed cd that I own, and I was wondering:
Why do I prefer that repetitive monotonous abrasive bass laid on a 4/4 kick drum over a rock song that theorically should be more enjoyable.
Why do I like this kind of music. Were did my musical tastes come from.
I wasn`t influenced from my parents, I wasn`t influenced by friends, I wasn`t influenced by society...
Oh well this is just pointless mental masturbation... I hope you understand what I am thinking about...

Well I don`t believe so....
If I was influenced by them I would probably have liked something very similar to what they proposed me =\...

ah but even by them showing you things you don't like, they're influencing your musical tastes.

As I said it was just some pointless thoughts I was having...
On why I like something so utterly alienating, un-human, over something more mainstream, something that I can understand why it is liked...
more than the influence of society, I was asking myself why I have a certain taste...
i know there is no answer for that..and that's why I said that is senseless...

my answers:
why do people like music? personally, music is something i can connect with, and not always have to share with people. it gives me somewhat of an emotional outlet, because lately i've found out i can't tell many people my thoughts. i lie back, and let the music handle it for me.
why does it have an effect on us? beats me...just the way we can connect with certain songs maybe. i can't explain the way music effects me, but it does tremedously.
what makes us listen to certain types? again, the way the different types make me think and feel have a lot of impact on what i listen to everyday.
...plus, much like Monoid, i have nothing better to do :D

Without realisnig it you are influenced slightly by everything.
ie the accent you have suits the people you live with the music you listen to is influenced by whats on tv/radio etc
otherwise you'd have nmever heard of it.
taste plays a critical part, but influence DOES happen. all the time.

Influences can't explain why you're listening to Aphex Twin and not Shania Twain.
