Maybe you should start.

Every action is a positive action, even if it has a negative
result.

ambient, techno, spacy music in general.
Im not really into IDM, more 60-110BPM ambient stuff.

you need to just sit @ one point, and whatever comes out
comes out.

THEN

leave it alone for 6 weeks.

Don't ever look at it, just do other shit for a while. Go
fishing, get in touch with shit you are shut away from.

6 weeks later, pull it out, and go over it with a comb, pick
it apart, what you like, how it makes you feel. And fix
it.

6 weeks, advice from Stephen King

I dont work that way regrettably.
Most of my track are made in a few hours, I start sequencing
and shit and 3 hours later I am recording.
I need to capture the energy of the moment. I cant really
work on something for more than a day.

offline BlatantEcho from All over (United States) on 2002-11-12 11:13 [#00438653]

sure you can.

it's part of getting out of what you do.

that's the whole point, if you break out of what you do,
you'll see the reasons you like doing it your way, POOF!
inspiration!

You mean, just leaving my gear for a few weeks? I started to
do that the past few days, just programming new sounds on my
synth. So I should actually go out into the real world? AR?

yourr mind will be in overr drrive and its clouding the good
stuff, hidden, you need to frree yourr mind up, get out
forrget about the music, and the inspirration will come to
you frrom things arround you.

jere is a good cheat for inspiration.... but you need to
have my brain.

I´m no good at translating the memory of a melody or
drumloop or synth into an actual sound. For example, i can
think of the theme to "Star Wars", say, but whistling it
produces something unrecognisable.

Applying this to some hardware and software results in
totally unique and origional melodies that are actually the
badly formed shadows of actual tunes in my head..

... simple and endless!
i´ve done this with stuff from music from Shinobi the
arcade game to Madness. Nuts!

no no

You sit down, 2night tommorow, and just bang out shit,
whatever, doesn't matter.

Then you just walk away. Don't do anything with making
music for 6 complete weeks. No matter what

Don't listen to your old music, listen to other stuff. Read
a book. 6 weeks. Go fishing, take a trip. UNwind and
worry about nothing.

Then when you come back, take out your music and listen.
Then rip it apart and fix it up.

You'll appreciate your old forumla again, and you'll be
reenergized to hit it again. You'll appreciate the old way
you made music.....

6 weeks, that's the magic number.

don't make any music for some time. instead, listen to
completely different music, that mostly does the trick for
me.

serious answer:

try moving your gear to another room (if possible). or even
just try facing your gear in another direction. that works
for me a lot of the times... and it's cheaper than an
eightball.

offline C738 from Outer Space on 2002-11-12 12:09 [#00438761]

I moved my gear like 4 feet to the left, and thinking of it,
since then things turned bad.

And thats also a serious answer.

What 'bout this?

I just go out with my little recorder and go compile a
sounds library, mechanical sounds, everything I can think
of. I havent done that yet.
And the idea of recording sounds everywhere feels good.

you're on the right track

Do easy things that make you smile

But you HAVE to get away from your music for a while, just
go.

When you come back, and things have been simple, you will be
ready to roll

take walks around your town and explore it, or even better
ride a bike. bike rides around town are what have given me
countless inspirations over the past couple years. no joke!

the recording sound Idea is extremly good...

Then when you are done just start tweaking what you
recorded...

You don`t know how many times a really good sound gave me
inspiration...
