...a brand new music genre that demands an all new set of rules and style of play? if you think about it, has everything been covered or will someone find a totally different style? im not talking about subgenres here im talking about an all new concept like 'jazz' or 'rock'.
i could go even further and ask the question above but add: will there be a new insturment like a 'guitar' or 'piano' invented in order to play it?

i think yes, the digital genre will continue to evolve thru new technologies, and people will be able to create completely new and completely individual sounds and styles that would be unimaginable to our ears today. as autechre said, people have barely scratched the surface of what's possible with digital.

Music evolves organically and never loses its roots so even if rupityliptic gets popular some eclectic guy will start playing it with three graxiteksolodes and a banjo.

BTW those are really cool words! I think rupytiliptic is North African music played by the white blood cells of teddy bears, and a graxiteksolode is a frog sitting in a hot frying pan until it dies.

the new genre will be a combination of low level bass resonance and living human entrails. the musicians will drink a metalic paste and use electromagnetic pickups pasted to their abdomens to record the sounds of peristalsis.

I cant really see anything new genra comming...
But I can see that there will be a LOT of fusion going on. A LOT
But new instruments are around everywhere. There is band I went to see live last week where the drummer had self made instrument. It was this thing that looked like a bass.... but it had pads for your fingers on the neck. And it played drum hits and fx and then on the bottom of it, it had loads of pads with just synth sounds..... very wierd... it was shaped like a guitar...

there'll prolly be a significant advance in biotechnology that'll produce some sort of apparatus that enables us to compose music directly from our brainwaves! i'm casually speculating, of course...

I hate to disappoint you but that instrument has been around for a while.... I forget the exact name but Allan Holdsworth plays one too. Basically it's a great big hairy midi trigger.

1. i hope so! 2. nah, probably not
There will be new computer-sounds ofcourse... but you were asking about an actual new instrument... i doubt it. It's been ages since anything new has been invented in this department hasn't it?

I remember driving in the car with my uncle and listening to an Al Dimeola tape, and my uncle asked me, "Isn't he that guy who shoves the guitar into his rectum and plays it with his toes?" (*)
So that could very well be the future of music.
(*) he really said that to an impressionable youngster. That's why I'm so twisted.
