actually, I don't really like this track too much now that I think about it, too r&b'ish for my tastes. I hope there's alot more raw hip hop and unpredictable lyrical madness in the other tracks.

yea it's very r&b and pretty slick for them but i like it. first, i think if anyone's going to be making this sort of music it should be people who can do it well (and the roots, it turns out, are up to it). second, they deserve a little radio love. third, it's not representitive of the rest of their new album, so no need to be alarmed.
it's a fun song and i enjoy it. i think a lot of people here (not you, but the average member) wouldn't appreciate the whole sex vibe of the song and the video, which is too bad cos it's well done.
as for phrenology, they've been writing for over 3 years and recording for almost 2, so it's going to be pretty well scrutinized. i dunno if all the songs will be so polished, but the live versions i've heard have some rawness to it (check "rock you" and "rhymes & ammo"). it's supposed to be a major departure though (they're sick of being pigeonholed into that whole conscious hip-hop/backpacker movement).

well, it's always nice to see good talent like them trying some new things, and I'm exited to see what you mean by 'major departure'. Have any of the tracks leaked online? I don't really want to download them, I'de rather wait and buy the album, but one of my buddies claims he's already downloaded it.

there's a version of "thought at work" the band themselves leaked out in march or april of this year that won't be on the album. it had their first experiment with sampling - the beatles' "hey bulldog" - but they couldn't clear it so they had to rewrite and rerecord it without it. so if you want that version it's not hard to find. "the roots - thought at work.mp3"
there's also "break you off" which you've heard. there's an alternate version with d'angelo singing instead of musiq but it's the same track more or less. all the other new songs are live; they don't want anything to leak out till the cd's on shelves.
