Hello peepz, what are some useful and cost effective drum
machines I should look into? my budget is around 200
dollars, and I want to create aphex style break beats and
such.. what would my best bet be?

Your best bet would be to be original.

software programs are the way to go

reason is great

youll never get the sound you want with a normal
drummachine, because normal drummachines dont allow you to
fuck with the sounds and effects... (like a program like
reason would)

I can't afford anything, so I've been using coke cans and
billard balls run through a Boss digital delay/reverb pedal.
Doesn't sound like anything else I have ever heard. (Not to
say that it is any good however)

Agreed.. no need to blow your cash on a drum machine when
you're sitting in frony of a machine right now that can
emulate 1,000's of drum machines...

haha, yeah random sounds are the way to go!

just plug a random instrument into your computer, press
record, then hit it a few times. TADA, new percussive sounds
:D

yeah, use software, floops is my favourite groovemachine,
just take time with it, you won't be disappointed. but if
you're a hardware freak, don't buy a boss/roland drummachine

think of me weird but i very much think sofware drum synths
are cheating.... its just far to easy... hardware you have
limitations (or greater limitations) therfore the final
product (to me) is a greater acheivement (when you get it to
sound the way you want it to ofcourse).. . also by altering
(tinkering) hardware you can manipulate everything, BUT i
wouldn't recomend it unless you realy know about electronics
and various circuitry.

my 2c ... but i dont recomend anything.. sorry

Boss Dr. 660, Boss Dr. 770.

Squarepusher has used the Dr. 660.

If your going to buy a hardware drummachine go with the Dr.
660, Dr. 770.

If you decide to get computer software instead, i would get
Native Instruments Battery or Kontact, alot more serious
software than fruityloops.

i have the 770

i wouldnt reccomend it

he wants aphex sounds... which are synthesized/sampled and
fucked with.

the 770 only has real drum sounds

Basically, hardware hes not going to find what he wants
because he would need to spend more, get a sampler and
effects.

so he would do better trying to achieve the sound he is
looking for with software.
