ARTHUR: "theres a button here. I wonder what'll happen when I push it."
FORD: "don't touch it."
*arthur pushes button, nasty beep sounds*
ARTHUR: "oh."
FORD: "what happened?"
ARTHUR: "a sign lit up, saying do not push this button again.."

i've, for some reason, never read. I think there's a mental meltdown uptown.
All I hear is how essential it is.

wellll... to be perfectly honest, they are good books, they make me happy, make me laugh a lot, BUT.. they are quite poorly written - with that I mean the construction of the novels.
to me they clearly seem to be written in an associative way, with little planning while writing, which makes the books kind of uneven structurally.
still.
they are essential.

You can't say they're poorly written. Adams is the writer who opened my eyes for the english language. I totally adore his style of writing.
The stories themselves are quite jumbled up, I agree to that. Then again the storylines aren't all that important in his books.
Read the two Dirk Gently novels if you haven't already. They're fucking excellent. I tend to like them more than the Hitchikeker 'trilogy'. His book with Mark Carwardine is also a great read.

o hell no. they are NOT poorly written. you just don't read them carefully enough and you've completely missed the point. they weren't meant to literary masterpieces, thats like saying Monty Python is badly lit. its a completely invalid point.
