here is a vocal peice i had to do for class
it has lyrics too... but i couldnt record it with real people... so i had to use samples of vocal "la's" so excuse the fact that it doesnt really sound like a choir
its a short peice, and is tonal, supposed to be very classical, so some of you might find it boring, but give it a shot...

Reminds me of music you'd hear in some shrine in Final Fantasy or something. That's a good thing!

Don't get me wrong, I think it is good. It just seems to be missing something.

The fact that it was something he HAD to do for class made me listen to it differently. Something that's forced...

its not really forced... i mean, the assignment was "make a vocal peice, using this stylistic harmony" besides that, it was all me
any classical music, and music you hear in movies follows these rules, so its not like it was "forced", its just a stylistic way of doing something

Would they ever get you to make a standard SONG, with lyrics that you'd have to write? Or... God forbid... SING? :-)

do you mean like... a rock song, or a pop song or something? for guitars, and drums etc. with a singer?
yes, but thats for the "songwritting" major
im doin Synthesis and Composition, so my required peices will be electronic works (sweet!), and Classical (contemporary, including avant garde etc)

Yeah, with verse, chorus, the ''standard'' thing. With all these electronic artists around here, I never get to hear some good old fashioned song writing.

hehe...
well nope, thats not what im studying
i am studying jazz harmony (its required for everyone) so thats more of a stand song with a verse chorus thing... just no words
i was in a rock band last year, and i wrote one of the songs...
didnt write the lyrics though... just the music. i liked it, except our singer sucked, and we broke up cause the guitarist moved...
but yeah, your not gonna hear it though, cause: singer sucks

I don't think I could stand being in a band... I'd have my own musical vision, and I am NOT easy to get along with... having 3 other people messing around with my musical direction would surely result in bloodshed. That's kind of the beauty of electronic music, it's so often done by yourself, with no outside input... no fucking moron guitarist that can't play the chords right while you're trying to sing, stuff like that.

I didn't really like it from a compositional POV - i studied Vocal Harmony, and this piece DID lack something... But maybe with real people it would sound better. Maybe shorten the upper melody, add some grace notes, leading notes...i definately think if you double the upper melody (eg quavers instead of crotchets sometimes, it would flow better). Plus, maybe a little syncopation once in a while, some bar-lapping sustained notes in the bass.... Just general thoughts -- I had to write tons of short 4-part Vocal Harmonies before, and that was the kind of shit I had to put in em.
hope this helps a little

My bad, I meant to say suspension, not Leading Note. But the rest of it stands.
If you have sibelius, I'd trade some 4-part vocal harmonies with you -- some of the ones I have (just short ones left), have UK versions of the leading note in them.
