OK....You know when people say " If you could meet your favorite artist what would you ask?" Well I always that I'd ask HOW DID YU GET STARTED?!!
I would love to ask afx, boards of canada , underworld , ae etc.....
because I want to start making music pretty bad and I look online on howmuch it costs to for synth's, drum machines, pc software etc.... Let along Dj'ing ( turntables etc) So how do you get started and work your way up? Anyone want to help me that'd be great, Im just really curious.

maybe stsrt off with cheap software like fruityloops. that would be your best bet.
then move on to more advanced software and eventually hardware when you save up your money.
or something. yeah

skip fruityloops. its crap. (but lets not start that boring little war again)
start with soundforge. its pretty simple in use, and you can make the sounds as complicated as you like.

Skip fruityloops? You can't start with just soundforge. All it is is a sound editor. You gotta have some kind of sequencer, and fruityloops has one of the best I've used. Not to say there aren't better ones, but Floops is simple and does everything any other prog can do. So I'd say get Sound Forge And fruityloops. And definetaly get Absynth...

nah, I meant to start with. just the bare minimum.
I use Cubase, but thats not an easy starter.. still, thats what I started with, so it can be done (although I'm still learning stuff about using it).

to elaborate:
I think its quite good to just start making samples and sounds, not so much compositions. get a feeling for sound.

"skip fruityloops. its crap"
youd be surprised to know some of your favorite artists use fruityloops.
i would recommend it. compare it to one of these:
http://www.akaipro.com//productimages/MPC4000-large.jpg
there is not a thing that an MPC series sampler can do that fruity cant do. then add VST, the piano roll, effects, direct X and buzz machines and you basically could destroy any other hardware and most software samplers in an instant. and i am sure you wouldnt say that piece of kit is "crap" would you?
start with something like fruity or orion, or even a tracker such as buzz and move up from there.
my $.02

okay, by a cheap groove box off your friend for 100 bucks. then get a korg sampler, a roland 202 drum machine, and a korg drum machine, you start to think you got it all. then you get an mpc, and you still have all the other stuff, you can do pretty much anything, but its fuckin annoying lugging that shit to gigs, so you save up, for ever, and by a powerbook g4 and run max/msp. once you are up and running on max/msp, you sell all your hardware and fuckin bring in the cash.

YOU NEED TO GET A SAMPLER FIRST! get a basic knowledge of how you place sounds in a sequence. Start finding(sampling) your own sounds and collecting sounds. Then decide wether you want to work with hardware samplers drummachines soundmodules/synths effects processor compressors or wether you want to use a computer or a combination of both, it all depends on what YOU like and what type of electronic music you want to make. You would want to try a sampler by akai, roland, ensoniq, EMU. If you want to make something serious it will cost quite a bit of money and time to find the right gear and or software then its challenging to make something you think sounds good.

I buy stuff second hand. ...sounds obvious,i know.
lots of bargains can be picked up at 'sound on sound' mag/website.
also,if you know what U want,look for reviews online-i.e.futuremusic.co.uk
If it makes a noise, just use it! (remember, Kraftwerk used one of those 'Speak and Spell' toys on the 'Computer World'album,so anything is possible!)

I think a healthy combination is to get a sequence (Fruity Loops is very flexible and cheap) and a hardware synth, and then download any free music program you can find. Don't use Floops sounds and don't use plugins instead of a little more work on the sounds. That's what I say. If you want to play live, floops and a synth isn't a great setup, but it could be done.
