I don't know if I was under the wrong impression of this
album but wasn't it supposed to have an insane amount of
samples? the booklet only shows 7 or so samples so whats the
deal or did I misunderstand something. thanks

all of the samples are from old vinyls and josh davis was
too lazy to list them all. or maybe the artists are dead.
the only samples he lists are from newer stuff, i think

those are the only ones he had to clear before releasing the
album, the rest aren't credited because he thought he could
get away with it (90% of them he has). the album is made up
of about 1000 different songs, i wouldn't be complaining
about just 7 being credited..

ok thanks for clarifying. does anyone know about Private
press? does this only have the ones listed or are there more
unlisted like entroducing? are there anywhere the same
amount of samples?

no man, it's like any form of electronic music.
especially house these days.
many sounds and melodies are sampled and effected and if
they are obscure enough and the record company doesn't think
they will pose a problem, they are left unlisted.
when a sample is listed, the artist must have attained
permission form said artist and someties a royalty is paid.
also, it ultimately depends on how much the sample carries
the song.
you can hear some NIN from the fragile in one of the songs
off private press. but it's so nominal that i think if trent
heard it he wouldn't care all that much.
the one that blew me away that wasn't credited is the cory
hart riff from i wear my sunglasses at night.
or maybe i'm jsut a big geek for reckognising it!
i cant; tyoe m tried turdre tirdetierd

yea which nin sample? i love nin and i've listened to TPP
about 50 times now and haven't heard anything from my
favorite album (the fragile). you could very well be right,
shadow hides tons of samples - but just tell us where you
hear it so we can give it a listen.

machine: all of dj shadow's music is constructed from
samples. he credits/pays for about 5-10% of the samples or
less.

I think Midnight In a Perfect World is def one if his
best...Got a beautiful CD single of it with a ton of
versions...

It's hard to believe it's 6 years since that came out...but
I guess it's one of those timeless bit of music...

sunglasses at night'!

the NIN sample is actually a trent reznor sample from driver
down, the second last track off of lost highway [soundtrack
that trent produced]
it appears in song 9[right thing] roughly .52 + .58 but is
then given away at 1:12 when it let loose a little. it's
the hip hop soounding 'horn swell' is the best way to
describe it, but it's just a snippet taken from the end bit
of driver down.
on DD there is this four note distorted synth that comes in
at 2.19 and then dominates the track til the piano outro and
sax overpower it over a minute later.
listen to driver down adn with that bit fresh in yr skull
listen to the right thing from private press.

I know dj shadow pulled a sample from information society,
who first pulled a sample from leonard nemoy (spock) from
star trek...

'pure energy'

i'm listening, i know which part of right thing you're
talking about but i don't hear it in the reznor track. which
part of driver down are you saying it is, a sample of the
distorted synth line that comes in at 2:19 or a sample of
the sax in the outro?

funny how secrets travel...

ok now i sort of hear the melody at 1:12 in right thing, it
could be sampled or it could be just a coincidence. great
find tho!
