Super Magnetic Neo from Australia on 2001-07-10 06:03 [#00013589]

I've seen a few people from Australia here so I know atleast
a few people will know what I'm talking about...

The show ended a while back and is not coming back for
another series. No real clear answer was givin though the
two possible reasons tossed up on the Alchemy website
message boards were A) the host's were tired and B) SBS (The
Network that makes/showed it) axed it.

I doubt SBS would ax it because even if the ratings werent
high that's not what SBS is about. The show things the
mainstream networks don't.

Alchemy IMHO is/was the best Australian music show ever. It
introduced me to such artists as Sqaurepusher, Prefuse73,
Mouse on Mars, Oval, Ken Ishii, Sense, Makai, ASAP, Cosmo
Vitelli, Denki Groove, Red Snapper, Wagon Christ, Tortoise
and many many more. They even had a whole show dedicated to
Aphex Twin!!!

The show will be sadly missed with it's indepth interviews,
music from around the World and it's host's who were funny
and knew what they were taking about.

R.I.P.
Alchemy
1998 - 2001

Any thoughts? I'm writing to SBS to find out a clear reason
why it was axed and to find out if there is a 1% chance it
could return one day? Maybe the host's just need a long
holiday :) If the show was axed because of the host's then
just put the show on with music SBS!!

And one final though... did any one outside Australia get
Alchemy?

H3XAN3 [C6H14] from Melb. on 2001-07-12 11:15 [#00014428]

yes Alchemy was a terrific show and i miss it. the last
season was lacking a bit compared to previous seasons, but
it was the only show of its kind here. so i don't bitch.

lets do a trip down memory lane, the interviews: ahh lets
see, they had a few ninjas - mr. scruff, luke vibert,
hexstatic...if i recall correcty kid koala? can't remember,
some chinese dude. any interviews from warp, apart from
chris cunningham. man i have a shit memory

that aphex episode was great! they showed all of his clips
except ventolin (which i still haven't seen yet!) and seeing
as they were a little short in material, a squarepusher and
autechre clip (having smoe relevance, since they interviewed
chris c.) i remember seeing a bootleg copy of that episode
in china town, man i should grabbed it!

ahhhhh, the memories.......

thats got me thinking...who on this messageboard DOES come
from Aus? i'll put my hand up first...

Chimp Systems from Tweak Valley on 2001-07-12 12:17 [#00014445]

I'm from the UK but I'd just like to say that that Alchemy
programme sounds fucking mint . . . I'm not surprised you're
gutted it's gone.

H3XAN3 [C6H14] from Melb. on 2001-07-12 14:31 [#00014492]

yeh, it was a wicked show. are their any similar programs in
the UK, like purely electronic/dance-music based?

Synchronicity -> where abouts in Aust. do you live?

Chimp Systems from Tweak Valley on 2001-07-12 14:38 [#00014493]

No, the UK ain't got any decent music shows... not unless
you like nu-metal or the Backstreet Abortions.

H3XAN3 [C6H14] from Melb. on 2001-07-12 14:48 [#00014495]

fuck....that's pretty shitty, considering England's pretty
much the world's electronic-music central.....

what the fuck is nu-metal? sounds all the fucking same to
me.

Centurix from Melbourne on 2001-07-12 15:15 [#00014507]

*sticks hand up*

Alchemy was great. I managed to get a copy of the Aphex
special in realvideo for joyrex.com

Centurix from Melbourne on 2001-07-12 15:17 [#00014509]

oh, and there's a quality version of the Ventolin video at
www.theaphextwin.com

Chimp Systems from Tweak Valley on 2001-07-12 15:22 [#00014511]

Nu-metal is that big-shorts and key-chains and bad-rapping
stuff that the likes of Limp Dipshit churn out. Like my old
pa used to tell me, "Son, metalheads don't get laid".

Super Magnetic Neo from Melbourne, Australia on 2001-07-12 16:17 [#00014557]

Yeah, it's very upsetting.

And yeah the last series wasnt as good as the others but as
you said it was the only show of it's kind...

Gee theres heaps of Melbournites here! Anyone live near
Frankston?

I'm very shocked that the UK has no good music shows.

Oh yeah that Aphex Twin special rocked :) I believe their
screening of Windowlicker was an Australian TV premiere.
Pitty about Ventolin though as someone else did I downloaded
it off theaphextwin.com
45MB it was, took me 3 hours :) Though it was worth it.

Super magnetic->thanks for that! the good thing about the
last season though was that they were getting a little more
focused on actual music-making...with software reviews
(reason, D.A.S.E etc) and talking to people who 'tinker'
with their machines (smallcock, that devilfish guy). that
was neat.

anyone from vict. seeing squarepusher at the prince of wales
next thurs?

Well, what are you doing here at this time?! :)

I shouldn't be up now. The whole reason why I didn't go to
bed on Thursday night and stayed up all Friday was so I
would be dead tired Friday night so I could go to bed at
night insted of crazy times! But it seems as if I've gotten
into my rut again!

Everything was going fine, I watched eat carpet (it seems as
with we both like the same SBS shows!) and felt like going
to bed but decided to have a look if my review of a move had
been posted on IMDB, but I couldn't stop there. Once on the
net I'm here for the whole night, damn!

It seems like I just told you a lot of pointless! Oh well!
=D

I won't be around to see the sun rise! (Though it is very
nice) =)

I'm going to bed, or I'll fall asleep here at my desk! And I
just know I'd drool all over it and wreck it and maybe it
will fry and I'll be fried as well and die here at my
computer all because I enjoy interacting with people on a
message board. If I die it will be all your fault!!!

Um, ... I'm going to bed +D Before I get anymore crazy! See
ya! (Hope I can say that, this is not a chat room after
all!)

Yes, I was also at the one in Sydney because I was fortunate
enough to have business there. Salmonella Dub played just
before, it was hella fun. I tell ya, he doesn't go halves
with the Vodka...

I don't watch a lot of TV, and it's rare for me to actually
go out of my way to switch on at a particular time to watch
a specific program. But each time Alchemy came on, I'd
prepare snacks and stuff to watch it with.

Anyone remember the show where they interviewed Bloody Fist
Records? That was funny.

We should all meet up for a pint sometime...

'Danz' was soooo much better than this show (from Channel
31) they interviewed Honeysmack.............thats about
all...

Ok, ok... im being sarcastic.. Danz didnt even come close,
all they did was show Hexstatic clips left right and centre.
(which was good)
