I would like to notify you about a Polish writer named Krystian Bala. I have known Krystian for 5 years. Most recently he photographed a tsunami relief project in Aceh, Indonesia for Theatre Amoeba http://theatreamoeba.expage.com. I am the artistic director of Theatre Amoeba. On September 5th, 2005 Krystian was kidnapped and physically abused by the Polish Police and held in custody for three days in a Wroclaw jail (page 15). The police attempted to charge him with murder. Despite the brutality, Krystian stated his innocence and refused to sign any papers. Krystian is the author of a fictional philosophical book called "Amok". A lot of the language and content is strong and there are several metaphors that might be considered against the Catholic Church and Polish tradition. During his brutal interrogation they referenced his book numerous times, citing it as proof of his guilt. After his initial arrest the judge ruled that there was clearly not enough evidence and instructed the police to “Release him immediately!” Following this, the police kept his passport for over three months, preventing him from completing his international work commitments. They also held his computer and prevented him from publishing his new book “De Lyrik” as well as working on other projects including an underwater photography book. His lawyer was denied access to his files and the police refused to accept evidence of Krystian’s innocence during this time. Krystian finally decided to file formal charges against the police and approach the press with his unfair treatment. By no coincidence, he was arrested shortly thereafter. The police once again took him into custody on January 16, 2006. He is presently in prison for three months while the police undertake an investigation. He is now being investigated as an accomplice to a murder that took place 5 years ago. The police do not have the murderer in custody. bump! (Mail from Denise mother) "Today at 10 o’clock it was planed a trial in Glogow in regards to the brutal arresting of our son Krystian. His lawyer was supposed to be there and defend him. I don’t know at this stage how it went, because the lawyer hasn’t came back to me yet. I am sure he has seen Krystian, so he will inform us. We received the first letter from our son from Wroclaw, Siwebodzinska Street yesterday. He writes that he can’t remember his last 2 weeks in the prison. He says that they had given him some stuff, as he can’t remember a thing. He quit smoking, because he thinks the stuff might be in the cigarettes. He isn’t well, can’t stand the situation and the place. We are trying to support him by letters and sending some money.Probably, his lawyer will see his records this week, as he said that hi received a confirmation from the law court confirming also that Kristian’s arrest was extended.I will let you know about it as soon as we know anything.
