USAphex Twin

Fresch from Trondheim on 2001-05-09 00:10 [#00005933]

How big/well known is Aphex Twin in the States? It seems
like there are a hell of a lot of AFX fans from the USA and
Australia(?!) here...even on the joyrex msgboards.

[REFLEX] from Western Canada on 2001-05-09 04:16 [#00005939]

lots is the states, I believe. Im in canada.. as it states
above, by my name. But there are a good number here as
well... loads of my friends own aphex twin cds.... or they
get me to burn them copies of something.. they cannot find
or afford.

Aron? from Canada on 2001-05-09 06:09 [#00005943]

I'm in Canada too, only like 2 of my friends listen to Aphex
Twin, or even electronic music in general. Most of the
people I know listen to punk and hip-hop. I guess Aphex twin
isn't very popular where i live in Canada (Saskatchewawn.
yawn).

[REFLEX] from Western Canada on 2001-05-09 06:23 [#00005944]

Saskatchewan! Ha.. Ive been there so many times.. where
abouts in there? Regina?... hm... I live In Edmonton.. its
not too shabby. I guess.

Clobe Smith from over here ... er: southern california on 2001-05-09 06:42 [#00005945]

i'm from southern california, and my friend (whom i will
call the eclectic bobby) introduced me to a wide variety of
music, from aphex to floyd to nofx (which was actually just
a phase). for a bit of time, i thought stuff like aphex
twin and boards of canada were our little secret. then i
met the friend who introduced it to him, then i realized
(especially at work) there were a lot of other people who
were into and in fact loved aphex twin. basically, when i
told everyone i was going to coachella, it was either,
"sweet, you get to see weezer!" or "sweet, i heard aphex
twin was performing ..." -- even if he pulled out. there is
definately a fan base here.

Mr Dirby from pittsburgh, pa usa on 2001-05-09 19:16 [#00005985]

I come from a small town in Ohio. there are a lot of people
who listen to aphex twin. And a guy at a used record store
suggested I try the RDJ album. and that is how I got into
aphex twin. but here in the big city only a few people I
meet and I meet then in odd places too.

[REFLEX] from Western Canada on 2001-05-09 19:52 [#00005989]

Aron?: Ah yes.. I have been ther many times.. never long
enough to find out if its really as boring as you say it is.
Oh well... Edmonton is fun, but nothing special.

Aron? from Canada on 2001-05-09 23:21 [#00006018]

Rephlex: yeah, i was in edmonton a couple of weeks ago
actully. My cousin lives there.

[REFLEX] from Western Canada on 2001-05-09 23:37 [#00006019]

Aron?: oh yeah? in which parts? this cousin of yours go to a
school? if you know let me know.. that would be nuts id i
knew this person.. probably not.. but whatever worth a
shot!.

Aron? from Canada on 2001-05-10 04:07 [#00006045]

Actully it's not really Edmonton. It's Sherwood Park, it's
like 10 minutes from Edmonton. He doesn't go to school, he's
a fire man.

[REFLEX] from Western Canada on 2001-05-10 04:22 [#00006046]

Aron?: sherwood park, yeah cool, i know a bunch of people
that live there. almost moved there a while ago. heheh..

Theifofalways from an ugly military base, Germany on 2001-05-10 06:23 [#00006051]

I got into RDJ when I was down in Frankfurt, they had all
his CDs up till Come To Daddy then. I thought 'Im never
going to be able to get these in the states', so I ended up
scouring the city of Frank. for all the AFX and later
SquarePusher music I could get my hands on.Now that would be
fine and well if Germans didnt charge like 25 bucks for a
cd. Much to my dismay, by the time I got back to the states,
every Newbury Comics record shop had all the disks I bought
at about half the damn price. So much for enlightening my
friends about braindance.

5 years of my life that i have liked aphex, most of my life
i have liked electronic music of some sort, and i have met
NO ONE with the same musical tastes, so at least you
canadian ppl can talk about it with each other, only on the
internet do i find people who like the same stuff as me, sad
isnt it?

Æ’(x) from Yes I can see it coming down now.... that's good....slowly....very good... on 2001-05-11 20:49 [#00006183]

I herald from the UniteAmericanState
=<{whatever}>=

anyway, there are a fair # of aphex fans here. I was the
only one in my small (2400 ppl) hometown for about 5 years.

Now all of the ex-skate punx (I have nothing against
skateboarding, by the way) are into it. they throw it around
to feel intelligent and "indie". Makes me cry a lot,
actually. They only use SAWII though, oh, and "Daddy" to
feel hardcore. They used to make fun of me because my music
was fake (i.e. made with computers).

They're the ones that subscribe to MTV.

They were "really" punk and they were "keepin it real" for
punk because "punk's not dead" and "skateboarding is not a
crime". (sad, tired cliche's). Again i have nothing against
punks or skateboarding (i enjoy both) but these little boys
that were "punk" and "real" that got 2 years older and drive
Saabs to school. No joke. So now, they like to tote RDJ
album with them, talk about how "wicked cool" Daddy is, or
whatever. The world is strange to me. i don't understand.

It's difficult. I still love the Twin, but it makes me feel
bad that people may asociate his music with these fools...

But I digress...

There is a huge fan base here. You can but RDJ at any mass
market music store, even through CD clubs like BMG, anywhere
has it. So, good or bad, there is plenty of exposure. Most
people that listen to music know of him.

Since there are Canadian afoot:
Does anybody know where the gravestone inside RDJ album is?
i always heard that it was somewhere in Canada, but I don't
know that for sure. I don't know why it would be there, but
I would like to go there someday.

"What I see.... is beyond all your dreaming.... once you
have sublimated your desires to me....you shall be free..."

ptolemy from canada on 2001-05-11 21:53 [#00006189]

the grave is in cornwall ontario...find it on a map about
300km east of toronto.
