Trip hop?

Archrival from NY on 2001-09-22 13:07 [#00035406]

Can you name groups and artists who make good trip hop?

With heavy beats (hip hop beats) and singing? Groups like
Tricky, Portishead.

What's the similarity between getting a blow-job from and
eighty-year-old and walking a tightrope?
In both cases you don't really want to look down.

You should also try DJ Shadow

Smith & Mighty !!! - Also from Bristol

They sometimes border on D'n'B and Dub on the occasion

Terranova - Close the door, features Tricky on vocals, quite
nice, but possibly not worth paying full price for.

Quoth from Berlin on 2001-09-23 01:45 [#00035513]

Portishead
Lamb [not mentioned before]
Bjork (possibly¿)
the one... the only... the most fucking bloke on this
planet... Mr. Mic Stutter aka me, Quoth, Pat

And although not "really" trip hop, might be close enough to
satiate your need for now

DJ Krush is highly recommendable (perhaps not his new album)
but the likes of Holonic:Slef Megamix, Kakusei and Code4109
or so ..apparently his duo with Japanese Brassists on Ki-Oku
is also meant to be really good!!!

CUN8eR LASiT from mm on 2001-09-23 01:47 [#00035516]

Yes. Lamb!

WTF?

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=C2644

was meant to be included above. this definition of trip hop
is quite broad .. ie some of the stuff quite different from
portishead and the like

crapnose from Montreal on 2001-09-23 03:01 [#00035530]

yeah, Shadow and Krush are straight-up hip hop, they're just
a little mellow on some of their solo releases.

if you like trip hop, it's not a trip hop track but you'll
probably like it: Serge Gainsbourg - "Melody".

Cheap Magnet (formerly .syncrhonicity.) on 2001-09-23 05:02 [#00035545]

Just as a side note, DJ Shadow is more or less credited with
being the first to 'invent' Trip Hop, even tho he himself
claims he is purely Hip Hop

him and Massive are my fav Trip Hop artists

Cheap Magnet (formerly .syncrhonicity.) on 2001-09-23 05:03 [#00035546]

wait, i just contradicted myself dammit...Massive Attack are
my favourite trip hop artists, not Shadow, due to the whole
thing above...dang

portishead seems to be the only "real" trip hop out there
worth listening to....

trip hop is beats, similar to that of hip hop, with a moody
ambience to it, and that is it. plain and simple.
as i've said before check out early releases from mo'wax and
ninja tune.

Quoting from Smokers Delight:

"A word in your'e ear mr & mrs media"

"There's a lot of talk" about this thing called "Trip Hop",
but when I listen to "it take's me back to trax like "2, 3,
Break" (the B-Boys) "Hip-Hop on Wax Vol, 1.2.3, "Breakdance
Electric Boogie" (The West St. Mob), and back then it was
called "HIP HOP", ten years on the media try to fool the
your B-Boys 'n' Girls with trendy names such as "TRIP HOP"
but at the end f the day "HIP HOP" is "HIP HOP"! - E.A.S.E.

baron - shut the fuck up please, and stop trying to maintain
some kind of dominance by saying 'THE BARON HAS SPOKEN' cos
it don't work, and i believe you are the only one who hasn't
realised this.
first off, i'm not a real fan of trip hop so i couldn't tell
you any names really apart from funki porcini, early dj
food, and fuck loads of early mo'wax, the point is, though,
that you may also not be a fan of trip hop as you don't know
what it is.
and fluffy bunny - well done, i agree with your quote (from
a mighty fine album as well), but, whether you like it or
not, music is labelled into several categories, and as the
developement of music continues through this era, more
categories will be dreamed up etc etc.....

fluffy bunny from mm on 2001-10-03 17:19 [#00038870]

true true ..

just adding another 'worthy'? opinion to the discussion.

ofcourse music will have to be categorised into an
increasing number of categories, especially in this age of
diversification etc.

at the end of the day though, music is music, and categories
to a large extent remain somewhat arbitrary - although I
don't have a problem with them as such.
