Hey waxers and plastics!

Can anyone explain to me what the Gantz Graf DVD is all
about? Music or merely graphix? Any good or crap?

Depends. If you find it in a bargain bucket for 3 pence then
I'd maybe consider getting it.

Get the music, but skip the DVD

They could have done so many cool things with this... an
entire DVD... but all you get is three videos (none of them
particularly interesting (altough i know alot of people
disagree with me)), selectable through one of the ugliest
menus i've ever seen.

And as a bonus some stills from the GG-video :-(

What a dissapointment!

yes i didn't like those videos at all.

But on the other hand i thought the music was fantastic!

I just wish i would have bought the single-cd version of it.
I really regret spending so much cash on a DVD i never
watch.

surrounded i must disagree with you here my man..

i've got the DVD and it's because of that video the GG-track
makes sense to me now
at first i thought of GG as noise but seeing the videoclip
along with the music really gives you a view on how the
track is build up

i don't regret buying the DVD, imo esp. the GG-video adds
very much to the music,
i like the other two videos also though

..and i used one of the 'special-feature-screenshots' as
background for my desktop :D

i'm happy with it, look --> :D
and yet another smile --> :D
another one coming up.... :D
'...man that GG-DVD really must be something...'

haha! if you don't wanna see the video, why buy the dvd??
funny :)

i agree with morton gantz graf makes more sense with the
graphics. although they could've added some more textures.
it's still pretty innovative though, i think. we won't look
back on it in 7 years or so like we do on the horrible
basscadet video :D

:D

The pleasure of viewing the Gantz Graf video is worth the
price of buying the DVD - no doubts.

It's an amazing piece of artwork!

noise? Well the track is noisy ;-) But definitely not
unstructured noise. I already heard that on my first listen
(when i hadn't watched the video yet). The main beat/melody
stands out rather clearly from the rest... and after a
couple more listens, all the little details also fell into
place.

A couple of days later i also watched the dvd...

"seeing the videoclip along with the music really gives
you a view on how the track is build up
"

well yeah... ofcourse i also noticed how the videoclip
reacts to the music. Every little sound is sort of
visualised. But i just don't see how that could make the
music better for everyone :-)

Oh well... there are as many opinions as there are people,
hehe.

"i like the other two videos also though"

even basscadet?! I almost fell asleep watching that :-p

"still enjoying the cd's..?"

hell yeah! :-)
(i'm not sure if you only mean the ones i ordered from Rare,
or also what i bought yesterday. But it actually doesn't
really matter because i'm enjoying all of them :-D)

"fav's already??"

Lol, i must not think about this too much... or i'll
probably come up with reasons for listing every cd i bought
in the last couple of days ;-) I've managed to cut it down
to a top6...

1. rest proof clockwork
2. confield
3. LP5
4. garbage
5. discovery
6. sakura

oh dear surrounded..

how can you NOT be impressed by the GG video..?

it is, indeed, a piece of art.

and the track itself is in so much noise that all music can
be considered to be noise.

well it's just random vector shapes moving about, in synch
with the music.

What's to like about it?

I mean i see the point! You hear a sound in Gantz
Graf... and at the same time on the screen an abstract shape
flashes. The music becomes more dense, and the screen
becomes more crowded... etc etc

I see all that... but it just doesn't do anything for me.
It's a bit like playing a cd in Windows Media Player, then
you can also set it to show you some colors or shapes that
change with the music. Yeah actually, the video reminds me a
whole lot of that!

and on top of that... even if i would have liked the video,
i would have still thought the DVD was extremely poorly
executed, and not enough to justify the hefty price.

Think about it... they could have put their entire
discography in there! Complete with their comment on every
release, fragments of sound etc. Maybe even some other cool
artwork and whatnot...

3 videos and some stills is really quite crappy...
considering the possibilities of DVD.

the price wasn't that hefty, come on..

and I don't think they are "random vector shapes".
Rutherford worked three months straight on the animation.

surrounded, have a look at the 'special-feature-screenshots'
see for instance how detailed they are..
in the video they move very quick, but when you look close
at a 'frozen' screenshot you can see the detail.. very small
parts and shadow etc.

i think the video is quite some artwork :)

Slightly more than the price of a normal album... i still
say it's alot for only 3 songs! The DVD feels more like a
promotion-item that should have been given away for free :-p
(not talking about the quality of the videos now, but just
the general lay-out and the quantity of the contents).

"and I don't think they are "random vector shapes".
Rutherford worked three months straight on the

"

Okay... i put it in the wrong words. What i meant was that
all the shapes are abstract. There's nothing "clever" about
it, and they don't mean anything. It's all geometrical
shapes, that don't seem to have any relationship to the
music.

Have you seen the Chemical Brothers video for "star guitar"?
In a way... you could say it has the same concept as the
GG-video. Only i liked this one much better. I didn't notice
anything the first time, but the second time i suddenly
started to grin as i realised: "hey how clever! Everything
the train passes is exactly synchronised with the music!"
It's awesome! I bored my entire family to death by telling
them how clever it was everytime the video was on MTV ;-)

When i watched GG i just thought (unexcited): "oh ok... all
these geometrical shapes are synchronised with the music...
yawn." I'm sure it has been alot of work for Mr.
Rutherford... but it has hardly paid off ;-)

I'll follow Morton's advice and study the stills sometime...
maybe they will help me appreciate the video a little
more...
