You need the instrumental and acapella versions of the track for a quality remix, as that is how it works when people want a remix, then send the diffent parts of the song to the remixer, usually in loop format with the different parts isolated (ie just the drum line) and work from that, but there are phase cancellation techniques that can be used to separate the vocals if you have just the intstrumental version of the track and cant find the accapella. Even if you dont have the acapella or intrumental, you can find some parts of a popular song, like a vocal solo or drum solo, or a part that is isolated for a while by its self and recycle those parts, and make a fan remix that way... while I am talking about Recycle....
Mickey Mouse audio tip for the day! :
A nice way to do a remix is with the programs Recycle and Reason.
Open up Recycle. Import the drums, melody line, vocals (if there are any), and get really intricate with penciling in the drums hit slices, and melody line note slices with the pencil tool. Do it by hand because the auto sensitivity bar which sets the slice pats ala a mathmatical algorithem, and although really well coded it can be sloppy about setting the slice marks sometimes, so maximize the audio image and be really intracate and get it all nicly sliced up, set the bar length (if you dont know how many bars the part is, just guess because it wont really matter that much when your doing a remix, and you can also re program it in Reason via the Dr. Rex loop player, to how ever way you want), then export the rex files.
Open up reason, create a mixer, and two Dr. Rex's. One for the drums, one for the synth line and one for whatever else you recycled. And viola, import your newly made recycle files.... drums and melody and whatever else part you recycled and exported to a rex file, and there you have it all ready to go, sliced efficiantly and able to time streatch to whatever bpm you desire.
Have fun
:^)

Naaa, you have to shell some cash out for it, but I'd imagine you could find it by other means using the internet *cough*
But if you want to buy it like I did go to the Propellerheads site, and you can buy it from them in the prop shop section. Yay!

More people should do dsp/glitch/mash up remix's of songs, the world would be a happier place I think.
