Scared of driving. ;(

I just started taking driverd ed classes (yes, IM eighteen
years old and only have my prmit *hides*) and Ive driven
before, but not a lot. Today, Im going to go with my mother
to get my allergy shots, and Im driving.

Im very scared. :( I have to do this because I know that if
I dont, I will never want to drive. Honestly, I have no
desire to drive. It terrifies me. Its very intimidating. I
have trouble doing things like backing up... because Im
short and can barely see over the seat.

Im a very safe driver (the rare times that I do drive) but
Im honestly terrified. :( I dont want to do it and now Im
depressed and... ungjhg. ;(

Any advice from anyone? I wish I had someone who would ride
in the back seat while I drove. ;(

You can't be a passenger all your life.

Collective traffic works.

The first time driving with no one else in the car is the
scariest.

Only real advice I can give is to drive slowly, don't have
music on in the car (till you're more confident), make sure
the car is okay (tires, oil etc.) and only do short journeys
on familiar roads to begin with.

Best of Luck.

try playing GTA III on your computer...
then the real life traffic won't be that horrifying :)

...don't know, just drive a lot, you'll get more and more
used to it
don't quit and stay home!!!

Okay, thanks everyone.

My mother will be in the passenger seat, because even though
Im eighteen I cant drive alone. I have to be with someone
who is 21 or older (since I only have my permit).

No music in car, go slow. I know the way to my allergy shots
VERY well. Im just so scared that Im shaking. :( Its mostly
just flat roads.

I want to hop in the car NOW and get it over with. :(

Oh yes, don't drink too much (certainly not alcohol ;) )
before setting off. Nothing worse than needing a leak mid
drive and not being able to stop :)

Just don't push yourself, I'm not sure what the learners
have over there but down here, Learners have a big yellow
'L' that sits in the corner of your front and rear
windows..... This does help you cause no matter how bad you
drive other moterist will be dodging to get well out of your
way! :D

Dont be too afraid, the other motorists are also trying not
to hit anything. Focus on the road and dont try to get
nervous!
Goodluck!

i'm terrified of driving motored vehicles. i've only driven
a speedboat. i'm good at that but anything on the land.....
i have never driven a scooter, a tracktor, a car, a moped or
anything in my entire life and i have no intention to do so.

I had an accident once. After then I really hated driving.
Never been very obsessed about cars anyway...

Just remember that it isnt you that will cause the accident,
it's everyone else. Be very defensive, becuase the world or
motoring is composed of a bunch of fucktards who drive
wrecklessly. Much like myself.

My advice: Get a roll cage installed in your car. Oh, and
seatbelts. they help too.

If you're absolutely terrified, stay off of highways.

I've been in a few minor fender benders, I'm a poor
driver... I'm not good at parking between cars or backing up
into a parking space, stuff like that. Precision movement,
especially when in reverse.

The first time I ever got on the road by myself, I pulled
into a store parking lot and rear ended some guy's car, then
drove away... hit and run!

Sucks.

we are havung our share of snow at the moment-it is snowing
pretty hard for couple of days now and i really like to
drive around in this conditions, but you have to be very
careful because of the other drivers which should better
stay at home if they are not comfortable in snow, i mean
they take a lot of joy away from ones that like snow.
i had a 4 weel drive about a year ago-now that was fun hehe,
i would actually still love to have one but is of no use
because our road maintenance service put all the snow away
really quick-bastards :)

I drove! I did well, but I nearly crashed into another car
at a really busy intersection. I dont turn sharp enough
because Im afraid that if I turn TOO sharply, the car will
do a 180 or something and go drastically to the side and off
the road or into something. :| Turns scare me...

any tips to overcome this fear? :(

all you need to do is to relax while driving, dont think of
what may happen-because nothing is going to
you should put on some music that relaxes you and just enjoy
the ride
alyways works for me :)

pomme--*sigh* fine, be that way.

tolstoyed--thanks! I have a hard time relaxing... I am
probably one of the most stressed out people youd ever meet.
My arms were locked and my knuckles felt numb from gripping
the wheel so hard. First time going 55. :|

Thanks again. :)

hmm, getting high yould work :)
no seriously, probably it is like that when you start
driving, i know when i was starting people were telling ne
im never going to be able to drive, two years after that i
was racing cars hehe, so there :)
it surely takes some effort on begining, but it becomes
really pleasent after a year or so, so i wouldnt worry if i
were you

Driving is very frightening. The first time I drove alone
there was ice and the car flipped over and landed upside
down... no firey explosion or anything... I got about a $6
ticket for "failure to control".

driving is the most amazing thing ever... I just love it...
it's the most private time for me, and I just love driving
and listening to music... I can think, and just enjoy my own
company... I love it!

i was so damn scared when I first started, I would be
terrified of driving on any street with even one other car,
definately DO NOT listen to music and drive slow like others
have said. backing out etc. takes a while to get used to
but now its not hard for me at all. I also still drive
slow, well the exact speed limit all the time, and I hate
the highway, i cant stand going that fast, cuz if you make
the slightest quick turn your pretty screwed (i suppose you
can say the same for regular street driving but its often
less severe and deadly)

You'll get it, keep trying

Don't worry about getting your licence late, I didn't gte
mine til I was well into eighteen and I had been doing
drivers ed for THREE years at home. All my classmates drove
home from school, I had fifteen year old friends who were
driving.. sad to say the least. Finally got my licence but
still no car or insurance. I drive occasionally, but it's
always with someone else and like to pick up my bro from
school or to church or the store. Nothing exciting. Only
been on a freeway once.

when it happened?

Luke (who was in the front seat while I was driving; my mom

a drivers liscence test, I would have passed. :) So thats
good, but hes probably just trying to make me feel better.

Im not too good at "manuverablility" :|

Thank you, though. :) You are all a big help. :D
