I play drums for 10 years now and prolly I can explain you the raw secrets of signatures. You have to start counting when the first basedrum or whatever makes the beat kicks in the first time and then its like this: 4/4 Means you have 4 Quarters with 4 Hits in each 0 = Bass = = Quarter 0===0===0===0=== 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + for the + you say and so its like one and two and three and four and [goto one] The first Number says you how long your beat is and the second number says you how it is divided in each hit. 7/8 is like 0===0===0===0===0===0===0=== you could split that quarters up but that would take too long.. |

I know it may seem silly that I care, but I'm very interested in time signatures and have been exploring odd ones recently, so that's why I was wondering if any bands used strange time signatures often. I'll check out Venetian Snares then. btw, many Autechre tracks also fooled me into thinking they were in an odd time signature too, when they were in fact in 4/4 time. I guess that makes them even cleverer. :) |

13/7 is indeed bullshit. The first number can be pretty much anything but the second number has to be divisible by 2. ?/3, ?/5, ?/7 signatures therefore can't exist because 1/3, 1/5, 1/7 notes etc. don't exist. Am I still making sense? |

yes, you can't count a 7th note, it is impossible. however, a computer can do it..... |

Indian music has the weirdest rythms i ever heard. Ravi Shankar, as the most popular for example has incredible cross rythms that usually never fit wih our western aesthetic. In indian music all the beat figures have certain names like Alap, Jor or Rupak Tal.... Sounds like new AFX tracknames to me, huh ? |

ok, here are some... Cichli is in 5/4... as is Yulqueen... that's all I can think of now... uzim: what the hell is 9/8/7... I think you're a bit off there... that is not how you write time signatures or whatever... also, 4/4 and 8/8 are the same thing... the only difference is that 4/4 means 4 quarter notes in a bar, while 8/8 means 8 eighth notes... which is exactly the same... but you wouldn't write it as 8/8... 4/4 is the standard... |

nuane is straight 4/4... the beats seem to wander randomly, but there is a straight 4/4 beat counted underneath... that was an easy one to count... Cichli was tough... I had read that it was 5/4, but I couldn't count it for the life of me... |

the songs on Go Plastic, which all sounds fucking crazy, are pretty much all in 4/4... I know for sure most of em are, and probably all... the thing is that they just play around the 4/4 beat, and do all kinds of freaky things within it... |

777 is in like 7/4 time... either that, or alternating 3/4 and 4/4 measures... which would really be the same thing... by the way, Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel is in 7/4 time... |

Squarepusher uses unusual time signatures on Music is Rotted one Note. For exemple, I think Theme from Vertical Limit is in 7/4 and My Sound is in 6/4. |

so my point is that..the Central part of IDM is still..Dance..I like the idea that no matter how experimental, abstract or avant garde there's always potential for a damn good groove in IDM..no matter how disguised, shuffled or contrived...my favourites are the ones that hint and tease at a groove and then shy away from it and do something more unpredictable.. this would be impossible unless 4/4 was being used... |
