I believe that balanced is when there is a third cable inside the cable.. that takes care of the disturbance around and then the whole thing subtracts the signal in the distrubance cable from the normal one and kazoom: Better sound.
Its probably wrong but it all has to do with a third cable inside the original cable and that the whole thing reduces noices.
And i am high on chocolate right now and just suck at english. wooh.

usual stereo is achieved by two separated signals in two wires (=unbalanced), in principle the right and the left channel arent linked in any way. since usually the signals are pretty much the same (aside from stereo effects of course) they can also be splitted into an "avarage" signal, that is the sum of the two incoming ones, and a "difference" signal that makes the stereo effects.
but maybe not.

"Balanced" audio interconnects, supported on the best consumer gear, provide superior noise rejection as compared with "unbalanced" (coaxial) interconnects, because they benefit from a phenomenon known as "common mode noise rejection," where outside electrical noise affects both conductors equally and, in effect, cancels itself out. If your gear supports balanced connections, your sound may benefit from making use of them.

ok so let me just ask this. a usb audio device called quatro has 4 balanced outputs and 4 balanced inputs. are each output a stereo output or am I only going to be able to send either right or left through each out and therefor end up with really only 2 stereo outs.
if that makes sense.

i know that quattro box...u have 4 balanced, thats 2 stereo channels as hepburn said. But to contain that balanced sound quality from your computer, your going to to need totally balanced connections from your box to your mixer, and from your mixer to your speakers..so make sure you ask about this stuff when purchasing
much peace, Use

balanced inputs/outputs eliminate problems with unbalanced cables, such as ground loops, by using a single earth instead of one earth per channel( as in stereo phone, left earth and right earth). The balanced output is a stereo output, since balanced=stereo. 4 balanced outputs would be 4 stereo outputs. to keep everything balanced use xlr cables, or similar, not phono!
