alright, i'm at home for a few weeks and obviously w/o my
college ethernet connection. to get online but avoid having
to pay, i signed up for AOL for the first time since i was
12 (which was many years ago, mind you). anyway, it's free,
but the software is so annoying. i don't know how some of
you can stand it. my internet browser's crashed a few times
already and i just installed aol tonight. anywya, my
question is: is there a way to dial into aol w/o using their
clunky software? can i just add a dial-up networking
connection w/ an aol access # for the phone # and my
login/pass, or do i have to use their software? thanks.

AOL and "software"

do not belong in the same sentence :)

---------------
after I'm done being a jerk, I can say I don't know the
answer to your question.

I doubt you can, as their whole deal is the internet portal
thing. Would defeat the purpose of make them a high priced
regular ISP.

there is yes, but you'll receive hate mail from them. i
recommend closing down the software (minimising), then
opening up your normal browser and using that.

well that's what i'm doing, but while minimalized the
software is still taking up more ram than i wish. what's the
method of avoiding it?

how much ram? not that much really, surely

err... i wouldn't advise it, you gotta change all your
internet options somewhere. too much hassle for myself

Most universities have a modem pool. You ought to ask your
local IT folks to see if you can get an account.
