the more chaotic 606 stuff is mostly done with hardware (gear), not software. macs do tend to be better for making music but the most important part of the process is the creative mind!!! :D ;) :p

man, i really dont think any particular software is gonna do it for you. you just need to find a program that allows you to do it, then practice.
i can quickly program fast drill style beats in a tracker (madtracker), but it took me about 2 years to learn to trak.
i switched to fruityloops (fruityloops) about 18mnths ago, and it pretty much set me back a while. but im starting to get the hang of it now.
thing is, whatever program you use, you gotta be patient. if you cant get drill beats out in a few weeks....keep trying. it might take weeks, months or years to get your head around a program. the more you swap and change the longer its gonna take.

You can do everything in Fruity Loops...and or Acid
one of the most basic tricks would be to Create the beats..with a nice hiphop swing to um at 100bpm and once you have created several slightly variant versions of them..(change the placement of hits..make sure you have plenty of shuffling brassy hits (hihats, cymbals etc))..and once you are satisfied that you can groove to them at 100bpm..crank them upto 200...

plus you have soundforge..try the time stretching effects on it to create snare rushes etc..(not just snarerushes also try bass rushes hithat rushess etc as well)..also export a few of the loops you have created and then process them with effects like Flangers, Delay etc..in Sound Forge..just for a nice sense of variation...
I think the most thrilling element of Drill'n'Bass is unpreditcability and certain randomness in the beats..so vary the placement of beats as often as possible..as soom as a rhythm becomes predictable..you are in Drum 'n 'Bass territory...

what? it shouldnt take more then a weekend to get a hang of a tracker.. it took me a weekend to learn buzz when it came out and it had like almost no documentation back then. you are slow..

write your beats at 180+. sample them. the write the rest of the song in half tempo using the sampled beats. you then have nice contrast between your break neck beats and more realistically sped melodies and harmonies.

use a step sequencer. all the trackers and fruity loops and acid are step sequencers. you dont have to play those beats in real time. just plug the notes in where you want them.

I struggle to make really complicated beats like drill'n'bass. I find it impossible. I can make reasonable beats but doing anything like drill'n'bass I just haven't cracked it and plus to do anything like Squarepusher would take eons of time and patience. I've tried for years to do things like that but just don't know how its done. I think it helps to have musical knowledge, I have none and I think its a serious disadvantage. I'd basically need to watch someone doing some beats like that for say a day or so and see what tricks and programs they use, then I meant have a chance. There ought to be a course in drill'n'bass. Lol.

buy whatever makes you comfortable - if people could buy boxes or soft that made them sound like pusher, 606, or apfix twine they would sell like hot cakes
get a trash can, rubber mallet, 4 track and a mic - make your OWN drill
get it - your OWN

why is a tracker better than a sequencer for drill?..why is a tracker better than a sequencer for anything?...surely not ease of use..it's vertical structure..is just unnatural for music...

maybe i found a way to make some good beats....it's my way.....maybe i'm the only person that uses soundforge to make drill'n'bass.......i just take a pattern and destroy it then i copy the beats in the way i like......and with sounforge i can apply effects to the 2 channels separately....well i'm happy because maybe i found a way.......
concrete drill'n'bass with guitar?
