It's much easier to discuss music over the net. I've
noticed that's it's difficult for me to tell people there
music tastes suck in person... but here it is no problem...
likewise in person i wouldn't want to sit around talking
about ae for 6 hours

perhaps it's because their taste in music is no better or
worse than yours, and if you really feel their taste in
music "sucks" then you're not a very good friend.

you're actually cruel enough to tell people you're not
friends with that something about them "sucks"?

i just mean that it's easier to discuss things when you
don't look people in the eye.. it's same thing with
intellectual attacks on paper.

"you're actually cruel enough to tell people you're not
friends with that something about them "sucks"? "

i don't understand..
1. no i'm not cruel!... 2. i don't judge people by what
music they listen to

yea, "the faceless victim." sure, it's easy to shoot your
mouth off on the internet and type something you don't have
the balls to say on the internet. maybe you don't even mean
it, maybe you just wanna fuck with people. personally this
got old for me after i turned 16 or so.

then whose feelings do you aim to hurt with your wanting to
tell people their taste in music "sucks"? that's just mean.

i guess i worded it wrong

telling people that there music tastes suck would be the
most extreme case.

i meant that we might disagree over an albumn or an artist
and if I knew you in person i'd be like... whatever..
whereas here we can discuss things down to the nitty gritty.

i've never told anyone in my life that their music tastes
suck

i'm glad cos that would be not only mean, it COULD be seen
as hypocritical (in the case where you've been told your
musical taste sucks; i know i've been told that before
plenty of times in recent years).

internet forums have a lot of pros and cons. one of the
pros, as you said, is the ability to have an intelligent
conversation about interesting topics. part of the reason we
can do that is because our mode of communication is writing,
and writing inherently requires some thought. conversations
in "real life" tend to be more on the fly and people like
myself don't often say the most interesting or eloquent
things unless given a moment to think. another reason
quality discussions are possible online is the diversity and
sheer number of users on a forum like this. you're bound to
find someone who understands you, agrees with you, or
disagrees with you, especially on a "niche" board like this.
(but try bringing up aphex on a teen chat board, or a gospel
forum.) so it definitely has some advantages, although they
can be far too alluring. it's easy to lose track of time on
forums for hours, days, or years.
