How does one program a good Drum pattern, I hear all those complicated drum patterns in IDM tracks, but being NOT a drummer, I cant recreate them ? ANy pointers ?

Yes start with randomness and speed it up. Keep pissing about until it sounds good and then just do little alterations during the track.

I will give you a suggestion... start with a pretty simple beat... and keep adding layers and layers of different drum hits to fit around it... untill it sounds random.... a controlled chaos
It has everything to do with the sounds your using as your hits... (bass kick, snare, hit hat, shaker....)
Then when you have your beat.. try putting it through some effects.
I hope this helps you out Monoid

small step notation
say you have.. a max of 96 beats/bar
try factors of 12, 18, 36, 10 & 8
cutting it fine with a sharp but resonant drum sample gives you that 'growl',
something ive been messing with lately

Effects can really liven up your drums....
experiment
If you take a simple beat with 1/8 notes and 1/4 notes... then try adding 1/32 notes or 1/64 notes around your main beat... that can get it sounding "complex"
There is no real secret to making a good drum sequence... its just practice and time. If you stick with it youll get better and better
Just dont compair yourself to others... or critique your work to another persons... thats the worst thing you could do for yourself. Find your own sound and style.
Keep on practicing and dont get frusterated
My 2 cents

Just learn. It's real complicated and not something you can tel someone how to do in 5 mins or over a messageboard.
I was drum programming for like years before I worked it out (well worked it out to the stage I'm at right now).
You can teach yourself these things, just listen to other drumbeats and emulate them with the soujnds that you have, or cut up sampled loops

ive been programming drums for 5 1/2 years, and I wasnt truely satisfied with my drums until this summer.
its a learning process. it takes time.
and sure, it might be a hobbie for these people... but its most likely a very important hobbie. something they do all the time, when ever they can.

I think listening to good techno is a key to understanding good drum programming..they start with the most basic possible 4/4 beat and then they start riffing and improvising around it with multiple syncopated percussion instruments..while still keeping the 4 on the floor..after that...start reducing the 4..stretching them..improvising on those while you keep the the rest of the syncopated rhythms wraped more consistant...
I have no idea if any of that made any sense.......

get a decimal to binary converter, where each bit of the resulting bytes represents a hit/no hit on your drum sequence, and feed it various patterns of decimal integers. Really easy to write down/remember 8-step sequences like this cos they're all numbers from 0-256.

I cheat on drums. I program a simple breakbeat and put it through a delay with a very short delay time. Just adjust the delay time and/or tempo until it sounds right.

Listen to funk, jazz, drum & bass, anything where the beat is really upfront. Listen to Meat Beat Manifesto too, heh. Especially Actual Sounds & Voices. Interesting live drumming on some of those tracks. It helps to listen to real, live drummers.
I suppose it is a bit easier when you're already familiar with rhythms. I've been playing drums for a while now, and it's still difficult at times to recreate what beat is in your head. That goes for all parts of the music though, I think.

it's really hard for me... i've got an old alesis drum machine where you have to hit the keys at the right time, but it's still fun. i stick mostly to slower beats, but there was a time when i used to do a lot of "jungle"

i always wanted to do drum'n'bass and tried nearly all of the above tricks. one thing i do is, i use sometimes the same samples in different songs, adding reverb or amplitude or something else. nobody noticed it yet.

The best way is to sample your own... go out and record just anything... come back, bring it on your computer and edit them so that you just take out the percussive sounds.
I know a lot of people that dont play drums that can program really good sequences. It could really help you out if you played drums... but its not nessisary. I dont think RDJ played drums...and he does some good programming

then whats the point? Why make music at all if something else is going to do it for you? Not to sound like an asshole... but really. Why not just use that playstation music program with premade loops and everything. Music is about expressing yourself... not letting a machine do all the expressing for you.
Sorry I kinda went off on this.....

yeah but the machine is always gonna do a certain amount for you anyway - thats the point of it. randomization is not like using a preset because its RANDOM (or at least pseudo random)

It really depends on how you use your machine I guess... cause you can input a melody by playing it through your synth.... or you could manually draw in the melody..... or, you could just hit randomize....
I just dont see the point of randomizing a melody... thats total lazyness IMHO

I like to use alot of randomness to begin with and then slowly I start to add my direction to it. eventually it loses alot of the original "random" pattern and is in fact something I created. But the initial random pattern was the inspiration for the one I later made with it.
dream station has a random sound generator. handy. fruityloops can be used in random ways if you know what you're doing with it. not just random pattern function. I have other ways of creating randomness and then I organise and create.
