many copywright anal people don't realise this, but by
buying cd's second hand, it is just as bad as downloading
mp3's, because no extra money goes to the artists just the
seller

Yeah but money already has been given to the
artists....think about it!

yes, but when the second person buys it second hand, no more
money has been passed along the line, if it changes hands 3
times it has still only been bought once, which makes it
just as bad as ripping a copy and giving it to 2 of your
friends

...but the artist/label doesn't own the specific copy.

copywright?

Well, it just highlights the ludicrous nature of copywrite
and the commodification of art.

Once you have bought a CD, it's yours to sell if you want.

Yes, despite what copyright stuff says on Videos etc. you
are legally allowed to sell them on.

Rather than saying buying second hand is bad, I think this
thread points out that there is nothing really wrong with
owning MP3s so long as you weren't going to buy it brand
new anyway
...

I'm just saying that the artists get no more money if it is
bought second hand

You right, the only way they could be considered to be
getting money from second hand sales (and this is tenuous at
best) is that people may be more inclined to buy something
new in the first place if they know they can sell it second
hand either: a) if they don't like it or, b) at an increased
price in a few years time.

I just hate the artists who guard their 'property'. Like
they don't get for free.

well, I buy used cds all the time as well as many new ones,
heres how I think of it. I buy mostly used cds from
bands\artists who have already broken up or stopped making
music therefore you dont really need to support them
anymore, also buying used is just like you were the person
to pay the band since the other person got rid of it so now
its you who gave the band money although it might be at a
different price.
