Im getting a laptop very soon and i could do with some good
advice on what to get.
i have heard that mac's are supposed to be loads better, but
i dont know why,
The pc laptop im concidering has a 2gig processor, 512ram,
15"screen, 40gig HD, dvd/cd burner + windows xp pro.
it comes to about £1500,
after i get my sound card and midi interface the figure will
be about £2000.
so i do have some money to play with, i need to know just
what it is about mac's that makes people choose them over
pc's. by the way, i will be using the laptop as my studio

If you want a serious tool for designer/photo/video programs
buy mac.

For the games and the rest buy pc.
(GOOOOO BILL!)

macs have very few hacks. That is not to say they are
impregnitable, but they are more secure because there are
less of them and hence less hacking interest.

PS headloc I am in the same situation as you at present. I
hav eabout £2000 to spend. Still nto sure what I want.....

Computers..
I'm thinking about buying a regular laptop.
Nice portable sequencer, nice for home use, and als
interesting machine for VJ-ing, I just hook up my midi
keyboard and off I go.

PowerBooks carry a pretty h they are totally worth it.
Oh and don't be fooled that becuase Macs have a much slower
MHz rate they are slower. This is wrong.
You can only compare MHz speeds with the same processor.
And the G3 and G4 are very different to Intel's Pentiums.
The fastest PowerBook G4 with 1GHz is faster in almost every
task than a PC laptop with 2GHz. And MacOS X is THE best OS
ever.(TM)
It could still be better, but it's the best out there at the
moment. Really fucking stable.

PCs are just fine for serious audio tasks.

I'd pick one with an AMD processor because the P4 is known
to have some trouble with certain softsynths(they're fixing
this though)

yes, macs are a bit faster than PCs but even when the PC has
double the amount of mhz the mac is still more expensive...

"And MacOS X is THE best OS
ever.(TM)" amen brother. and now they got the audio side of
it finalised we're gonna see LOADS more software getting
ported from OS9. Plus it's apparrently an absolutely
wonderful OS for handling sound. in other words it might not
quite be there at the moment but it will be, and it'll be
fucking brilliant when it is.

OS X may well be the thing which ends this "macs over pcs
for audio" argument for good.

"macs have very few hacks"

that is not true, there is something out there called
surfers serials.......

do a search for it at google if you want.

Or do a tracker search on hotline

... and thats all I got to say about that

well, if you are buying this for music only... id go with
the MAC.

If you want to play games... the mac wont be for you. There
just arnt many games made for MAC.

MACs are more expensive, but totally worth it. They hardly
ever EVER crash (and im still on OS9), and those who I know
who have OSX, say theyve never had it crash.

Also, with OSX, you eliminate alot of headaches as far as
audio/midi routing goes. Its not built in, so no set ups or
troubleshooting is required. You plug in something, and wham
bam, it does it for you. Plug in a new synth into the midi,
wham bam, it routes it, and loads the patch names,
automatically.

I myself am saving for a powerbook, and it will be used
for:
1. Writting Music. It will be the base of my studio. (Im
basically all software based)
2. Doing film scores
3. Live electronic Gigs.
4. Private use, internet, mp3s etc (although if i can afford
it, i think ill keep my old iMAC for this, so my laptop
doesnt get bogged down with mp3s and stuff)

*eeer it IS built in, so no setups or trouble shooting is
required.

but the whole mac os is totally backwards to windows, has
anyone here started using windows then migrated over to mac
? it might slow me down too much having to learn a new o.s
How different is it ?

ok...this is a fact...macs are more stable than pcs yes and
they are awesome for audio\video\graphics and whatnot
however you cant do a fuckin thing on a mac aside from that,
the mac os is very limited (as is windows) but on windows
you can also do graphics(do a smaller extent) and all that.
but pcs are way better for games, playing online and almost
anything else you need to do.

now i hate bill gates, and have nothing against macs but
theres really no point in buying a mac unless you do
video\audio.
