Consistant albums!?

offline DJ Xammax from not America on 2002-11-23 14:27 [#00452985]

What I mean by that is that the tracks either flow real
nice, or that the album has excellent tracks song after
song, though not all the way through. Or both. I can't think
of any that I never feel like skipping from time to time,
where it's like in ratings Track 1: 10/10 Track 2: 9/10
Track 3: 10/10.

I think the best run of songs I know is my recent favourite
OK Computer, where the first three songs get a hefty 10/10,
then about 8 for Exit Music.

I can't put ratings on it at the moment but SAW85-92 has
excellent 5 excellent tracks at the start, if Green Calx
weren't there then it would 6.

Okay your turn.

an album is too big to use as a unit of aesthetic judgement
accurately.

the last 8 tracks of µziq's tango n vectif rerelease flow
like treacle to my ears....

also, they are good songs that are consistant in the album

i have to agree with sgt.pepper.

i never skip tracks on that. an amazing album. 10/10.
brilliant opener medley with 'little help from ym friends'
then straight into 'lucy'. such consistency. the george
track is actually my fav. on the album. though i like all
the tracks my other fav.s are 'lucy', 'day in the life'
'good morning'.

i agree on sigur ros. Especially Agaetis Byrjun! That album
flows like nothing else.

I also agree on MHTRTC
haven't listened to geogaddi enough.

+i'd like to add Pearl Jam - Vs. All the songs are
fantastic, no exceptions. And they all go together really
well... more so than on any of their other albums.

Yeah Geogaddi would be the most consistant for me, if it
weren't for Alpha and Omega, which everyone except me seems
to like. I agree with you on Endtroducing, Machine.

And Anus, you're English you must've known how that sounded!

The first two that come to mind are sigur ros, () and mum,
finally we are no one. those are both transcendent in my
eyes, every moment. i listen to different types of music so
it's hard to know what i should mention... yagya, rhythm of
snow is very nice throughout.

OK Computer is the most flawless album I can think of... I
never want to skip anything, though Lucky and The Tourist
don't really get me going, so the album gets more boring for
me as it goes on. But still... the high quality never stops.

drukQs is very consistent, just because half the tracks are
crazy and the others piano, that has nothing to do with
flow. are you saying that every song has to be in the same
style to flow? if so thats outrageously stupid.

i agree
often contrasts make for a much better flow than all the
songs on an album to be in the same style. When they all
sound alike, the entire album will be a bit like a boring
grey blur.

You need variation! Taking you from one beautiful moment to
the next...

Still i think druqks is almost consistent...

if it wasn't for that damn gwarek2 song... *sigh*

I think massive gaps between songs are terrible for the
flows of albums. And I think there is something like a 10
second gap between Avril 14th and Mt. Saint Michael.

offline Wolfslice from Bay Area, CA (United States) on 2002-11-24 15:36 [#00454499]

Explain how Drukqs could possibly be consistant (its one of
my favorite albums of all time so i'm not bashing on it
here) but, none of the songs flow into one another, they are
sporatically placed throughout the cd... if you didn't know
any better you wouldnt even know if was the same artist
throughout. What possibly makes it consistant rather then
inconsistancy itself?

the gaps are also incredibly frustrating, yes! :-( I forgot
about that. It's not just between Avril and Mt Michaels...
there are seconds-long silences between most of the tracks.

The thing is that it's not just random. The way the entire
album is constructed is very well done i think. You start
off with the soothing sounds of Jynweythek, and right after
that the first beats off vordhosbn... that contrast! It's
just amazing. Have you ever tried listening to all the
"proper" tracks in a row? (vordhosbn, omgyjya switch7,
cock/ver10... etc.)... i think it's boring just way, just a
collection of tracks. The way druqks is now i think makes it
an album rather than just a loose collection of
songs.

There are beautiful moments/contrasts everywhere! For
instance: Gwely Mernans puts you in an almost
hypnotic/sleepy state with that calm pulsating rhtyhm...
then after six awesome minutes the beautiful melodies in
Bbydhyonchord gently bring you back on earth... and then the
album smacks you in the face with Cock/ver10 ;-)... man...
it's just amazing. If Cock/ver10 would have started
immediately afer Gwely Mernans the contrast would have been
too big... ridiculous even. He just had to put that sweet
little track inbetween them to make it flow better.

I can't picture these songs in any other order. Even if i
listen to one song seperately, in my mind the next one
already starts to play when it's over.

way through, in particular Substrata, I never feel like
skipping a track on this album and the tracks flow and
compliment each other nicely. How ambient albums should be :
