did you see that doco on Assignment a wee while ago. had all
the "contenders" for the next government.

have you read Jean Baudrillard's article "The Gulf War did
not take place" ? Quite a provokative/insightful read.

I've been meaning to. I thought it was an interesting idea.
Still, I know a couple of people who served in it, so unless
3 of my mates are lying it did take place :P

apparently the title accounts for 90% of the
misunderstanding.

he isn't saying it didn't "take place" as such, but it
wasn't an event (ie something that can't be predicted). um..
i could say more .. dunno if it will give away too much or
whatever?

some say the title was a provocation..an intellectual
challenge/red herring...

in an important sense the war didn't "take place" - but
Baudrillard is far from ignoring all the lives lost .. in
fact, it could be argued that this was his incentive for
writing the article.

I think after Saddam is gone some other dictator will take
over and if that's not the case then Iraq will split into 3
sections how will probably be at war with eachother... And
we will not be any safer because then they hate us even
more. And besides, I can think of another country in that
area who ignored UN resolutions for a while, commits acts of
war and is in the posession of weapons of mass destruction
and is supported in this by the west...

um, on what do you base that..?

Iraq:
Ethnic makeup: 75% Arab, 15-20% Kurd (who don't like
eachother)
Religion: 60% Shiite Muslim, 35% Sunni Muslim (lots of
tension between the two)
+lots of warlords + lots of precious oil to fight for

I'd say it's a highly unstable situation...

I think the title refers to the fact that war was never
actually declared. Hence Gulf "Conflict." But I might be
wrong...
