RE: idm

Live = play yer own stuff
DJ = play yer own stuff, and some other peoples stuff

Is ther eany other difference? eg. does LIVE entail some Bez
like gizmo who dances his bollox off on stage?

"live" is when you play an instrument realtime
DJ = Playing pre-recorded records/mixing
Turntablism = both(use records as instruments)

The line is very thin betwen the two when it comes to IDM.

live/dj, no boundaries now :)

djing = mixing 2 complete tracks
playing "live" = playing for example 8 partial tracks at
once, more like a live mixdown really

i started by lugging synths and samplers to gigs

then

i got a lap top and played mp3s (like most laptop
performers) (shock!)

now i actually perform live using this new gismo software

sorry

u can tell its live cos it all goes bonkers and then pulls
together for a bit then goes bonkers again

for me its more than a live mixdown.

I use Cubase SX, gather a huge battery of samples and build
up a track live in Cubase, using plugins, equalizers, etc.
to alter sound.

offline J-HOK on 2002-11-16 14:12 [#00444300]
Points: 904 Status: Addict

cool, lots of people just play whole tracks in cubase and
fiddle with the EQ a bit:)

i used to use iTunes :)

i want to start playing live

im thinking ill use Live, and export previous songs,
individually (the different parts... drums synth etc etc)
and do live mixes, and mess with effects.

So its kind of like, on the spot interpretations of my
tracks...

offline J-HOK on 2002-11-16 14:48 [#00444329]
Points: 904 Status: Addict

ive got all my tracks split into bass/rhythm/melody
sections, then i can mix everything in live and then delve
into other loops and stuff on the fly - makes going gigs a
lot more interesting for me and hopefully the audience. when
i used to use iTunes, people could tell i was bored :( but
my gigs are more edgy or edgey now

yeah, I played 2 or 3 gigs in highschool, and I basically
just pressed play... it was boring as fuck.

you got any tracks I can listen to J-Hok?

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-11-16 14:51 [#00444333]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

another cool thing to consider, if you dont want to tweak
your tracks live...

there is a new software out that lets you do real time video
manipulation.

You could do video interpretations of your tracks...

albums like DE9 seem to be bridging the gap btw the whole
LIVE vs DJ thing ..

i wonder what sort of stuff Fennoberg use?

you can play live with completely preprogrammed/pre recorded
elements if you mixdown and dabble with twidling the
parameters in real time..improvise with the levels..add and
subtract new loops etc...
