I remember thinking it was hilarious that "special needs"
also refered to incredibly bright kids who needed extra
lessons to keep them occupied (poor buggers!). You can
imagine someone mistaking them for a retard...

I remember being introduced to a guy in a crowded pub and my
mate said (aside) He's alright, but he's a bit slow. The guy
had a fairly vacant expression and I made a point of talking
slowly and simply to him. After a bit he said to our mutual
friend, what's wrong with you mate? He said, yeah Ceri why
are you talking to henry like he's retarded. I explained, he
said, no you idiot, I said he was a bit of a sloane
(For non UKers benefit - a "sloane" is a lower-upper class
londoner...)
