There's no law that says you have to like Aphex Twin. Enjoy
your Kid606 and have a good day.

Well.... name one other artist who made the kind of sound
you can hear on Selected ambient works vol 1, in 1982. Isnt
that enough to prove something.

the fact that he has created new genres and beaten paths for
artsists around the world
he's one of the most influencial artists in idm right now
and probably ever

By the way, I agree with Steve - you dont have to like
anything or anyone. There are artists whose music I dont
like either, but I can still respect them for being special
in some way.

i got saw 1 and i think it pales after you listen to

special(cd 1 is great cd 2 awful)

cd 2 is some of his best work!

n/m we obviously have different opinions, i'll just leave it
at that

enjoy autechre, they're great too

yeah i understand that aphex is very influential but i think
that other artists have developed his idea in a better
way.......saw 1 is good but i don't know there are songs
that i really hate of that record......like
ptolemy....actium....pulsewidth......the rest is very good!

i guess if you lived it when he set about setting the
standarrd you may think differrent. in the light of the new
bands that have followed in his footsteps maybe he's not
AMAZING, but neitherr arre the Pixies when you look at it
like that but they arre the daddys. just like RDJ.

to daydream nation or bad moon rising or cofusion is sex or
evol i don't feel the music as old or dated....and is music
that is almost 20 years old.....and i like also pixies....i
think they are pretty unique......

i've heard saw85-92 and drukqs, from these listens i'd say
he's fantasticlly overrated compared to Ae and BoC, even
though there's lots of people who think differently,
therefore i've got to respect what he's done.

yea i like fugazi a lot.. finally got to see them this past

to be honest clubs aren't really big in DC. they just shut
down our only notable dance club (Buzz; you might've heard
of it). most clubs here are either jazz or go-go (DC's only
music that hasn't caught on big outside of the city).

i go to live concerts for fun. also, while there are no
major clubs, there're a lot of pubs and fine restaurants.
there are some tiny clubs but they're not really for music
lovers. (just.... animal lovers)

he was one of the pioneers of IDM, thats why he gets all the

i can't think of any artist whose output has been perfect.
nin i'm 95% happy with. bjork about 98%. radiohead 98%.
mogwai 90%. aphex twin 90%. dj shadow 95%.

actually portishead probably comes close. i love all the
album tracks. they'd get a 100% if it weren't for some of
their remixes on singles and their remixes of other artists.
90%.

not as good concerts. i used to like moby a few years ago
(up till 2000). i bet he's still good live but i'm not
interested. mocheeba i like what little i've heard. i love
their new song with slick rick about ricky d killing his
wife for getting too fat after having their baby.

"well i don't like aphex twin......"

that's OK

"i heard all the stuff he has done and i can say that is way
too overrated"

Well you can't look into someone else's mind so how do you
know how someone else should rate him?

"what's special about richard?maybe i just don't
understand....."

the combination of catchy melodies, sonic tricks and great
breakbeats with tons of tweaks, diversity, playfulnes(newer
tracks), almost ritualistic darkness(older tracks)

"i think autechre are a lot better.......they are much more
experimental and austere.....more intresting.....and i also
prefer kid 606 matmos pan sonic oval ecc ecc"

I think their music is totally different...

90% of their music leaves me cold aphex is emotional as well
as being technically groundbreaking - he's also melodic and
sometimes even dancebale + he has a range of emotions and
styles whilst autechre only seem to have one - he does what
autechre do over an album in one song and makes it
listenable and involving

i have feel simillar towards another respected icon in IDM.
BoC. i just cant get them. I didnt like music has the right
to children and havent been botherd to check out the new
record. i probably should give the new record a try but
right now i dont feel like it. i understand why people like
them but there is something that i dont like about them that
i cant really figure out.. hmmz.

but i have to agree with you on pan sonic...... they are
great...... i wouldnt say they are better then aphex because
i dont think they really compare...... diffrent
styles....... its like comparing a paint program with a
audio program IMHO :)

For you to ask "What is so great" is equally as challangeing
an arguement as for me to say "he is great" and that is all
your getting from me about it.

He is great.

How can someone who isn't even "mainstream" be considered
over-rated? I think Britney Spears fits this term more
properly

I think that of all the idm artists I've heard RDJ is the
most talented when it comes to natural talent, but is also
too fucked in the head to be as good an artist as he
could... if he would use his talent to it's fullest and
release more shit we wouldn't have to have this argument

Actually BoC I find are one of the least respected IDM
artists - mainly because of their popularity (obviously
within the genre of music). Most people seem to say "Fuck's
sake, what's up with Boards Of Canada, everyone loves em and
I think they suck!" - I think they're pretty overrated and
that has been covered many a time on this board. Aphex is
obviously revered for doing what he did for electronic music
and maybe a lot of people look at him with beer goggles but
at the end of the day he's made some fantastic music IMO so
I will always respect him as an artist.

Plaid are better, though =oD

RDJ isn't overrated. He's done every possible style and done
it well, and trailblazed it more often than not. He's the
jack of all trades. Wish the guy wasn't so weird sometimes,
though.

yeah, jarworski pretty much summed it up.. also, it's not as
cool and fun to like a band that everyone likes on some
superficial level, when to you it's a deep, meaningful part
of your life and you sorta discovered them earlier, etc.
It's partly selfishness and elitism, but we've had long,
uncomfortable discussions about that...
