Anyone creating music..?

If so, how do you protect yourselves from being too
influenced by your "idoles"?
This is quite a problem for me. When Im at the comp.
creating and listening to what I have made, it sounds pretty
good! But then I realize that it sounds like a lot of the
music I listen to. And that was never my intention. Should
one go into total isolation to be totally original, not
listening to any music whatsoever?

(Sorry about the language and the spelling. I dont get much
exercise in the english writing. ;o))

yeah.. no probs being influenced cos i couldn´t possibly
generate the grooves my "·idols" make....instead i have
been inspired by thier spirit and dive into my own work with
all my soul and damn the criticism of my peers, most of whom
think my music is arse.... but i really enjoy it.

I dont listen much ambient at all, allthough I make a lot of
shit like that.
People say I have a recognizable sound.
Check it at

if you feel to, offcourse.

I made a lot of music sounding like what I listened. In my
opinion one has to 'ripe' to his or her own sound. It took
me 6 years to sound like what I sound like nowadays.

My music sounds nothing like I want it to. Not really unique
or anything. When I'm making the sounds and tunes myself it
sounds like Autechre. If I'm messing about with something
simple like eJay, it's a lot more fun. That's when it sounds
sort of like RjD2 or DJ SHadow or something.

Occasionally I stumble upon synth patches or sounds that are
very similair to an artist I like. Once I even chanced upon
the melody to "Dark" by Manic Miner. I tend not to include
these things unless they really fit with the track and
taking them away purely to avoid sounding like them would
really detract from the track. That said I seldom actively
set out to imitate another artist...

Elvis said that he tried to avoid listening to others' music
in order to not be influenced by them. Personally I think
even if you don't hear other peoples stuff you'll sound like
them by chance- people have pointed out that one of my
tracks (and one of Zeus') sound very much like autechre- at
the time we wrote them neither of us had heard any
autechre...

I think if you listen to others music you can at least
intentionally change it so it doesn't sound the same and
hence avoid being accused of being a rip-off merchant...

I know what you mean, some of my best stuff seems to come
from using stuff like ejay or acid. Bit of a shame really...

Yeah, I like that saying; "Fuck it". ;o)
But Im not satisfied, because I feel that someone else
already has done it, whatever I do. It feels like my music
is superfluous. (I mean - it is!)

I listen to other music to analyze their techniques.
Sound usage and rhythm programming etc.
I also tend to use 2 different bassdrums to create more
vivid drums.

Ceri JC: That´s why I only use samples and sounds that I
somehow created myself.
(Which often only means that I take an existing sound and
fuck it up beyond recognition.)

Thats a good concept! :)
I accidently inserted such a sample in a track.
It were timestretched voices, I put em in a rhythmical loop,
pitched down.
They sounded like some voice / water / hissing thing
cabbling through your head bouncing back against the insides
of your skull.
At least, thats how I experienced it...
