yeah, I wanna know what it's like to hear him play.

Us american fellows will prolly never know. But I mean,
does everyone do drugs and hop about, or is it chill?

Does he spin shit like "4" or does he mix shit and just make
sonic sounds??

I read a review of when he played as part of the NME (music
mag) tour in the UK. Apparently it was just RDJ and his
laptop on stage (all the other kit he was usin must of been
out of sight) and he was producin loads of weird stuff and
muckin round with samples un that. Making all sonic sounds,
bass drills etc.
Fantastic apparently and the visuals were menat to of been
smart

so he just fucks around then?

Doesn't sound like he plays any album tracks. I think
that's cool, but I mean, I think most people would be on
drugs anyway, so they would care less.

I wanna go just to see him, does he shake hands after words
or anything?
------------
Thinking about this, I know very little about RDJ that man,
but I guess most people don't either.

I think when he´s on the bill as DJ he usually cuts up
other people´s stuff with a bit of his thrown in. When
he´s billed as live he plays his own tracks, and some
squarepusher, usually mixed a bit...

yep I think he does just that!!!

doubt he meets anyone after tho.
If he's playin in Manchester, i wanna go see him, cos it ud
be cool

BlatantEcho - surely you must have some downloaded sets?

I've been to see him a few times in london over the last 12
months. They have all been laptop dj sets and as Xanatos
says, he plays mostly other peoples stuff with some of his
mixed in. He is partial to SP and snares, but to be honest,
i don't recognise at least half the stuff.

The sets have varied tremendously. As Aphex Twin at NME, i
guess that was really just a promotional do for drukqs where
he played maybe half a dozen tracks off the new album, but
he definitley plays unreleased stuff at everyone. He's said
in interviews that he loves playing like a record he
produced yeasterday to a live audience as it's a great way
to guage how good it is through crowd reaction. (My new MD
is broken but perhaps it's good advice that if you go see
rdj then gets your hands on one to record it as we can
always do with some unreleased stuff! He always plays some
i'm sure).

Rephlex - Jan - Hardcore gabba

NME - Feb - Drukqs stuff - mental dnb

Turnmills - April - Old Skool Acid

Ether - May - Chilled stuff (PW, 85-92 - right up to
hardcore shit!)

Rephlex - Sept - Soundscapes and hardcore wierd shit

I would guess 10% of stuff played was his, released and
unreleased.

And yes, i would say most people go suitably berserk to the
appropriate tracks

i do not jamesa, suprising no?

I find enough content in his album tracks to keep me busy,
at least for the time being.

living on the Left Coast means I can catch RDJ on his next
club date out here, when he plays NOWHEREBAR.COM

oh, fuck, I wanna see him live now, quite badly

i saw him live some months ago.
he played unreleased stuff (apart of windowlicker, remix by
afx #1 and the voice of iz us) from differents styles (acid,
d'n'b, ambient, electro, tecno...) without losing his
personal style and complexity.

he played a cover of A-team song, in electro therms.

sublime.

Live?? My interpretation may be different to yours. I do not
consider sitting behind a laptop, adding effects and whatnot
as being "live."

I don't make music so don't know too much about it, but what
i do know is that i've seen him with a laptop dragging
tracks into sequence, readying them to be the next track.

In order for a live set, surely he would need many hands,
such as, i don't know, a monkey drummer perhaps!

For you guys who are handy with music making programmes, can
you play live using a laptop? Say for example, he was
playing Windowlicker live, what part of the track could he
be actively playing?

let me put it this way: if nirvana were going to play a live
concert and thousands of fans showed up only to see that it
was just kurt cobain behind 2 turntables selecting his
favorite rock songs.

in my opinion, that is *NOT* a live show. same goes for
these lazy electronic musicians who have such talent it's
disgusting. look at AFX, SP, Mark Bell, Mike Paradinas, etc.
-- they all play either dj sets (no live music at all) or
laptop/dj sets (barely any live manipulation). it makes me
mad.

i agree partly-but for nirvana to play live became some kind
of rutine, so its basicly the same thing for me
i mean they can both improvize (electronic and classical
musicians)
im sure many of top class dj's that are spining records from
3 decks lose more energy as krist novoselic did playing bass

whether or not it's as energetic, it's a bit of a
disappointment. at least for me cos i can't get the fact
that they could be doing a lot better shows out of my mind.

live = creating music in the present

dj = playing pre-recorded music

I go to see rdj dj cos he bangs out some good shit! I would
however swap 100 of his dj sets for one live set circa '95
'96 playing some HAB/rdj album beats (oh yeah ;) !!
