I have a tip for all producers out there, dont get too
stoned until after you are satisfied with the work you have
done for the day/night.
Has anyone else got any pearls of wisdom to add ?

don't track the drums first

save everything.
sample your bass lines cos they are a bitch to play in with
a keyboard.

What he said, save a clean copy of everything before you
apply effects to it. And if your using Floops, give each
element of the drums a track, don't multitrack them... if
you're applying effects(or even not), it saves a lot of
grief.

you know, I've never thought to do that before. instead of
lumping all the drum parts into one track, put each element
into one seperate track... that'd leave open the possibility
of much more tweaking I suspect

close your eyes and hold your breath and push as many random
buttons as possible until you run out of breath

thats how i make all my songs

don't sequence, the more stoned the better, make yer music
disposable.

(1) if you have loop-deafness, export the section you are
working on, and listen to it reversed- you'll hear your
track afresh.

(2) work towards simplicity - let your self be expressed
rather than your technique

(3) finish all of your tracks (even the detritus)

(4) if you wanna be stoned, then be generally stoned rather
than specifically stoned

(5) let yourself be a conduit, dont fight what comes through
you

(6) make your music lasting

Never scan through preset sounds and try to combine them
into a song. Always program the sounds yourself, the way you
imagined them in your head. Flicking through presets in a
synth/computer is the worst way of working.

true, many of my ideas have disintegrated through scaning
the presets trying to find somthing close to the sound i
want. My best stuff i have come up with by accident just
through experimenting with the kit

bob said it all really; save save save save save save.
especially if you're using Soundforge 4.5.

Why should I apply effects afterwards ? If the overall sound
relies heavily on FILTERS and STUFF, how can you know if the
instruments / synths fit toghter before you apply the
effects........

Oh yeah, my advie : Use lots of Filters, I figured out that
most synths sound sheit without any filters ;)

all the advice given above has lots of "Nevers" and "Always"
in it... surely everything should be open to change....?
my advice is mess about until it sounds good...

oh and ok, don't _try_ to be organised (with your samples,
the way you arrange parts, mix etc.) don't conciously think
of ways to do it cos you'll grow your own system of
arranging stuff if you do it enough, and you'll be far more
familiar with this system than the ultra-tidy one you
figured out and wrote down on a piece of paper at the
beginning.

Can anyone tell me of some software that completely fucks up
sound? I need one desperately.

if you do want to work with pre-made samples, go here to
find some - you can then edit them yourself

or if you're looking for some software to use, go here and
find something

organise your samples logically. Use descriptive names and
sub folders/etc then it is much easier.....you need a HH, so
go drums/hh/hh1.wav or you want some vocals
/vox/male/distorted/shouting.wav thats my great idea:)

I always hide the track view- so I can't see when something
is about to occur- makes it easier to tell if something
should happen a few bars earlier/later...

Dave_G: Yep, I have a very similair system for organising my
samples.

Map: I think even if you don't hand over mastering duties to
someone else, it's worth getting their input to help with
it.
