I've been seriously been getting into late era John Coltrane(1965-67) recently. I have "Stellar Regions", so can anyone recommend any other albums of this era that I should pick up next?

The most obvious answer is Miles Davis's classic album "Kind of Blue" (1959). Seen by many (myself included) as one of the greatest jazz albums of all time. This is some of Coltrane's finest mid period work. As far as Coltrane's own albums, "Giant Steps" is usually considered his mid-period classic. Late-period Coltrane (1965-67 He died in 1967 around 40 years old) is defined by his foray into "free" or "avant-guard" jazz. The little that I have heard is fucking fantastic. Incredibly complex and emotional. This music still sounds radical today, even when compared to Autechre and the like. Go to Impulse! Records web site and listen to some clips. I highly recommend "Stellar Regions" if you are interested in challenging and intellectual music of this sort. Not for everyone however.

yo empiricus, yea the later coltrane is supreme to all other music out there, well thats an exaggeration but its definitly good. his free stuff is grand. see if you can get some live recordings of his from the late 60's, that stuff is fuckin wicked.

"Stellar Regions"? I own "Interstellar Space" I think. Well, not late Trane, but best Trane, 4 me, is "Ballads" and "Trane meets Duke", both from Impulse records. And for dates, "Trane for lovers", nice compilation. Anyway, nothing compares to the first Miles quintet.
