I'm thinking of ordering a record from an American website.
Does anyone in the UK have any experience with the import
tax and duty you have to pay?

I read somewhere that goods under £18 in value are exempt
(unless they are alcohol, tobacco products, perfume or
toilet waters).

Well I've ordered from america plenty of times and never
paid the tax. Plus I just brought back a couple of hundred
quids worth of music and DVDs and not paid. Maybe I've been
lucky.

Play.com operate out of Jersey (as a nice tax dodge that
allows the low prices I presume)- my brother's gf has a
house in jersey and they're always driving cars back and for
on ferries etc. and clocking up days there for tax avoidance
:P

Naughty, naughty.

I wanted to order from soleilmoon, but I can't figure out
how much they are going to charge to ship a 12". You have to
pay $2.50 for insurance anyway, plus then something like $15
to ship to the UK. Bah.

That's stupid price. If it's buying privately then it's
understandable but otherwise that's stupid. I paid $6 for a
12" from America once. That's including postage. It's cost
more than that to post in England. Actually that was a
private sell/buy as well. Don't pay $15 for postage for a
record.

I agree that it is too much, but the 12" in question is
venetian snares - shitfuckers! And I can't find it cheaper
anywhere here.

Click me and use the advanced search and you'll
probably find what you want. I've used this site loads of
times. Always gone for good ratings and Gemm guarenteed ones
though.
