how do you think aphex makes his music does he have it all
thougt out in his head or does he improvise when he sits
down to make a track

i think he dreams it, then spends the following day trying
to realise the dream

no, he really does dream his songs, then spends hours trying
to re-create them, thats how most people make music isnt it?

the thing i find when making traks is, you just gotta go
with the flow.

you might start with a bit of an idea (a beat or melody,
bassline, something) but you gotta let it go where it wants
to.

i never really know where the things are gonna end up.

but yeah, everyone works in different ways.

I rarely get "extreme" music in dreams, usually fairly
simple synth melodies. I've only managed to recreate a synth
"patch" from a dream once. It wasn't terribly good- just a
challenge to get it down in digital form.

That said I find it really hard to get down music from my
head as it's usually more classical/folksy type stuff and
I'm gash at traditional composition (plus I lack a full
orchestra at my beck & call 24hrs a day :) )

i get hours of music in my dreams, its fun to listen to it
all, but difficult to remember much detail :( and even more
difficult to translate it into reality :<

Well I think he really does experiment. Makes a note of what
sounds good and what it sounded like and how he created it.
After a bit he goes through his notes and sees what he
thinks would combine to make something. I can't put a tune
from my head down for toffee. I have all these really cool
drum patterns in my head but I can't get them out. I want a
machines that takes music out of your head and straight onto
the screen for you. That'd be sweet. Imagine the
possibilities for IDM......

learn the drums, then you'll release them. + i shared a flat
with theaphextwin for 3 or 4 years, often chatting 'bout
music making-- unless he lied to me :(

i think its easy to get the tunes from your head down in
some way or other, it's creating the atmosphere that goes
with the tunes thats difficult, that feeling that came with
the tune.

Ah, the drums is one thing I can get down from my head- I
tend to just use a software drum machine and I can get it
pretty accurate. It's just a shame you can't put the odd
beat just a little bit off time (like a real drummer would).
I know there are "humanise" settings, but I'd like to be
able to do it really precisely "off" if that makes sense?

the old saying "Music is 1% inspiration, and 99%
persperation"

meaning, once you just get that one good idea, that
inspiration, the rest of it just falls into place around it

I can't get my midi keyboard to work :(
I know that it's not my card as my midi controller works
fine.

Thanks for the idea though, that'd be the ideal way to do
it... I was tempted to just record the line out of the
keyboard on precussion setting before.

MIDI! I forget about that... I need a new cable. Anyone know
where I can get one on-line in the UK? The 25 pin one for
the Joystick/Midi in on soundcards.

Dunno mate, should be able to get it at maplins.co.uk I
bought mine from a synth shop in london... they certainly
are handy, esp. as they have a piggy back slot to pug a
joypad in as well... Mine was £15, should be about £12
online I think.

Maplins.co.uk? Great! I used to go to them when I was into
electronics but they kept giving me the wrong resisters and
stuff because rather then admit they didn't know what I was
talking about they would give me anything so I stopped using
them. That URL will be handy tho thnx! Hopefully no hy00man
error.

Due to their ineptitude with shipping components I missed a
B at A level DT by a very small margin. However, other than
that they've been pretty good apart from selling a flatmate
the wrong sort of network cable. Damn, come to think of it
my MP3 CD player is playing up now and I got that from them
too...

Still I must have bought about 100 things from them over the
years so 2 things going wrong isn't that bad. They're good
for cabling & connectors, but the staff are sometimes a bit
ignorant (I mean really, anyone who is a savvy electrician,
salesperson and IT bod all in one wouldn't work in a shop as
a sales assistant) and you should be warned of buying
imported junk electronics from them.

Remember Tandy? I used to hate those guys. I'd go in looking
for stuff for my BBC Micro and they would either patronize
the hell out of me, pressure me to buy some crap I didn't
want or just sell me stuff that wouldn't work. Everything I
got from Tandy/Radioshack used to break. Everything. My BBC
Micro didn't progress any place cuz of them. :/

They should've leant the basic rule of life. Don't fuck
with another mans BBC Micro
It's quite simple. If they
do it should be execution. No Judge. No jury. Fucking go out
and hang them.

HEY, i think the technical aspects are stil the hardest part
when it comes to making music...like...how do I create this
sound, where can those Drum Samples etc.....

Definately, recreating a sound from your head is very hard.
Some you couldn't even start to do...

i acctually think its much easier getting a sound out of my
head, and the production etc, then to come up with a really
great musical element, melody etc.

well, at least you got echo.
But I sometimes fall asleep while still being kinda
conscious and then I can hear anything I want, like strings
and drums and melodies, all in different patterns.
Its hard to recreate, but I use the general ideas and sounds
to create something different.

christian vander of the freaky freejazz band magma also sees
all his music in his dreams. his songs even have their own
language (from his dreams). it is like a mixture of
hungarian, english and german.

my fiance claims he must see better dreams than richard but
i really, really don't agree :)
