Hi all,
I know this isn't a videogame forum, but a lot of you here
are partial to the odd game. Something that is done
regularly on the llamasoft forum I belong to is a videogame
challenge, they all vote on a game to be the game for that
week and they compete to see who can get the high score.
It's best if we choose something old/freeware so people can
easily get a copy. No prizes or anything like that, just a
bit of fun. Put suggestions for titles here and we'll vote
in a few days if people are interested:

Astroblaster-\ Aphex related- samples
Berzerker---/ used in Caustic Window...
Pacman
Mr Do.
Bombjack

Astroblaster gets my vote. Where can I get a copy?

It runs on M.A.M.E. (see www.mame.dk for a copy of the
software to run it) once we all agree on a game, I'll sort
people out with the neccesary roms via soulseek/email...

Kudos to Princo for giving me "Berzerk" last night. Such a
good old game and (I think) one of the first to use
synthesised speech.

My current highscore.

Wow. Syncronicity. Someone just told me about mame
yesterday... I was quite literally about to preform a google
search to find out what it was named (I knew it was kinda
like maim but I had forgotten) this very minute. Cheers.

CHICKEN FIGHT LIKE A ROBOT!!!!! :-|

*sample from 'berzerk'*

Oh yeah.... Don't forget 54 Cymru Beats has a voice sample
from 'Berzerk' in it aswell! :)

Ceri - Its a tough nut to crack isnt it... but keep
practising :)

Good one, will bear it in mind :)

Taxi: It's really good, but it's a swine to get roms
nowadays. Your best bet is to find someone who'll sell you a
10 CD complete set :)

I'm def. getting better at it and working out little
strategies... I need to get GBA mame so I can practice at
lunchtimes :)

Astroblaster is a cool old game ! (editor gremlin/sega) I
vote for it. The rom size is 34 kb I think everybody
interrested can receive it by e-mail.
and if you want to compare your score to the best players
go to twingalaxies .

A good, I don't have the samples, so I'll get them tonight
:)

Astroblaster is good, but I prefer pheenix (less AT related
tho...)

Have you ever tried gyruss. This is another old classic
instead of moving left/right like in any other game ; you
move around the screen on a circle. This is mor trippy if
you want my opinion.

Just looking at twingalaxies... saw this score at crazytaxi
2:

Around Apple, Arcade Rules - PREMIERE EVENT
$227,595.64 V Leto, Matt

That is insane. The highest I have ever got is about $3500
and I have finished the game (apart from one crazy pyramid
challenge) and consider myself "good" at it!

What kind of verificaton method ? It's easy to make a screen
shot of a game you played with the cheats enabled...

offline Ceri JC from Jefferson City (United States) on 2002-10-30 03:08 [#00421126]
Points: 23533 Status: Moderator | Followup to str_ph: #00421124 | Show recordbag

I know, it's also easy to spend the time faking a screen
dump rather than practicing. I guess you just have to rely
on people's honesty. Seeing as there's no prize involved and
it is a community here, I would hope no-one would be that
unsporting...

I'll check how they verify scores at llamasoft :)

We'll need to makes sure we're all using the same version of
mame, then use a recording as verification- this will show
real scores & also make all but the most subtle of cheating
apparent...

If we reckon someone is cheating we can demand a recording
to verify it (smallish files, they're not like MPGs!) there
are ways to hack a recording, but it'd take longer than just
practicing at the game...

They'd have to be pretty sad to lie on a MB about their
score. I mean I got 10,000,000,000 on Astroblaster so I
don't need to ;)

I know, I reckon proof should only be demanded if say, one
person gets 10*the next highest score consistantly or we
have reason to suspect they're cheating... Hopefully no one
here would be that sad :)
Anyway, I reckon berzerker or Astroblaster for first game
due to rdj theme... anyone else go an opinion?

Ah, metal slug x, 1 continue hard difficulty, highest score.
That'd be a challenge. I'm reluctant to use neo-geo games
(at least till this becomes a regular thing) as big DLs
would exclude some poor 56k peeps!

metal slug 2 and 3 are the best ever. Such a shame that a
company bought the rights after SNK died and made this
uninspired metal slug 4 :(

was send this guy in Aus 10 Blank CD's and he filled them
with MAME madness and a few other emulations :)

You can get circuit diagrams on how to re-wire classic
console pads online. My mate re-wired a megadrive pad to
work on the pc... Maybe get a saturn pad & rewire it?

Best bet is an X-arcade joystick, but those babies ain't
cheap :P
