In classical music when someone says like...some symphony opus number 56...what does that mean? opus...

i beleive... but i could be wrong
they are just numbers given to works after the composer is dead.
its in a time order... oldest to newest.
the composers dont name them that... scholars do

so you mean like...say x symphony opus # 30...that same symphony has 30 opuses? or do they just tack on any old number?

its like the order the composer wrote/released the music
so like, whatever order the peices are written, thats the opus # they get.
like the first work they ever put out, thats opus #1... and so forth
