why are we always supposed to feel bad about someone we don't know (as in personally, not just knowing they exist somewhere in the world) dying?
i don't think it's good he passed away or anything, but i didn't know him.. so it's not like this is huge, globally-impacting, important news

how would you know? i'm sure there are fans which would find his death as quite sad, and then these are people including yourself which aren't particularly bothered which is fair enough.
in answer to your question, 'we' DON'T have to feel bad, assuming that we did / didn't know him, or of him, and i don't see anyone saying that it WAS important, but then who deems what IS important, and then again to whom? It's just an opinion, which we express as individuals, that's all.

yeah, but as forcefully as news is spread (often capitalizing on death) we're all told about this person who died and we're just supposed to feel bad, whether we like it or not, when a celebrity dies, it becomes global news as if it means anything. yeah, it sucks when anyone dies prematurely, and i understand the fans of any such person will be sad, but news gives off the impression that everyone is supposed to feel sympathy whether they want to or not

it's not a matter of choice anymore when the news bombards you with "this person died - feel sorry about it now. we said now! DO IT!" 300 times a minute.. i mean just look at how the media fed on the infamous Sept. 11th

Well I think in this case it would impact a lot of people, since many recognize him from his films and are sad that he'll no longer be able to bring them joy through entertainment.

"we're supposed to feel bad whether we like it or not"
"it's not a matter of choice anymore"
really? are we? i was never aware of that, and i'm not just saying that to play devil's advocate. death doesn't have to be negative.
don't be naiive, there's ALWAYS choice.

you left out my explaination of what situation causes there to be no choice, but even at that, don't take it so literal. there is a choice, of course, but it's difficult to do that when all you hear is how sad you're supposed to be.. again, like they did during the sept. 11 attacks

english lesson #1: if you're going to say "i could care less", get it right, eh? it's "I COULDN'T CARE LESS".... i don't understand the number of times i've seen americans write "i could care less" without realising that it therefore means that they actually do care quite a lot....
sheesh... (for the benefit of our american cousins)
